September 30, 201510 yr Welcome aboard Danny, glad to have you. If you put your general location in the header you might be surprised how many of the IFI gang live within visiting distance. It's obvious what went wrong. You don't know how to forge weld. There's a LOT more to it than just heating and beating. If you'll stop by I'll be happy to show you how.Frosty The Lucky.
September 30, 201510 yr Hint: You need to post your location. What went wrong? you haven't read the information available in the sticked threads.
September 30, 201510 yr What flux were you using; what alloy(s), what fuel, how much and how it was set up, where you put your piece in the stack; how you judged welding temps; how many years of smithing experience you have, etc and so on. *DETAILS*!
September 30, 201510 yr But I just saw the guy on TV, ( you know, the one that rides the mule ) ... hammer out a Katana in about 3 minutes, ( using a rock for an Anvil ) ... and then use it to hunt, kill and butcher a Buffalo .....Why do all you OLD guys always act like this stuff is so hard ..... .
September 30, 201510 yr How many S hooks have you forged? Bottle openers? Plant hangers? Fire pokers? If you have no prior experience, I think you're expecting too much of yourself to launch straight into a damascus knife!
October 6, 201510 yr I get students in my "how to blacksmith" class who can't draw out 1/4" square stock but they tell me they makes knives from old files/RR Spikes and old ball peen hammer heads. Thusly........I don't know what to believe in terms of knowing any basics. Yes. No. Maybe.......... I take what I hear at face value.
October 6, 201510 yr I think we scared him off asking for enough details to actually make good suggestions...
