fesmith
Since Hofi’s last session in the USA in 2006 he has reinvented the German blacksmithing programs with his innovative techniques, taught and demonstrated in Europe and at home in Israel. Now in honor of Center for Metal Arts founder Ed Mack, Hofi returns one more time to this side of the Atlantic for a celebration of the forge with two powerhouse weeks of workshop intensives, and 5 events to choose from. If you ever wanted to learn with Hofi, if you want to know how to turn your hammer hand into a power stroke, if you want to learn how to make the power hammer more efficient, if you want to learn some Hofi toolmaking, here is your chance to do it without an overseas flight. We have set up these classes to give you the most choice and flexibility. Mix and match the five sessions to fit your schedule. Oct 9-11: Ergonomic Hammer Work with Uri Hofi (Wednesday through Friday) Three days of demonstration and hands-on time at your own Hofi-tooled anvil. Learn the efficient power stroke hammer swing to protect your body from repetitive motion injuries, different uses of the hammer and anvil surface, and the most productive ways to go about moving metal. Hofi looks at process and thinks about a faster or easier way to achieve the same outcome. If you’ve heard that “Get it hot and hit it hard” sums up blacksmithing, this class can boost your productivity and save your swinging arm for years ahead. A condensed and intensive version of Hofi’s well-known 5-day course. Experience hands-on forging on the Hofi-style anvil base. Limited to 10 participants. Oct 12-13: Advanced Toolmaking Weekend with Uri Hofi (Saturday - Sunday) Since his last sessions here, Hofi has been invited to re-engineer the traditional German metal arts education. He has also worked on his course in Toolmaking. In this 2-day weekend session you will make some of those tools to take home with you, and learn how to take your toolmaking skills back to your own workspace. Limited to 5 participants. Oct 14: Columbus Day Ironfest and Demos with Uri Hofi (Monday) Uri Hofi is modeling this holiday Ironfest after a one-day program he has done in Europe. There will be demos of ergonomic hand hammering, and use of the power hammer, interspersed with vintage Hofi stories, lunch with Hofi, and other festivities. Come for the day and stay for the ceremonial Ringing of the Anvil. $60 for the day includes lunch with Hofi. Please register ahead to secure a spot. Oct 16-18: Ergonomic Hammer Work with Uri Hofi (Wednesday through Friday) Three days of demonstration and hands-on time at your own Hofi-tooled anvil. Limited to 10 participants. Oct 19-20: Power Hammer Weekend with Uri Hofi Uri Hofi’s traditional 5-day class is condensed into 2 days. Work with the combination and radius dies, designed by Hofi for their aggressive bite and their use in free-form forging. Demonstrations of techniques and elements, and plenty of hands-on time to try your own hand at the power hammer. Limited to 5 participants. fesmith
The Center for Metal Arts is in downstate NY, in the black dirt farming village of Florida. We are near major interstates Rte 84 and Rte 87, and major airports Newark, JFK and LaGuardia. While the USA is a big place, distance can be a relative thing, as in the past we have had inquiries for Hofi visits from Australia, Columbia and Nigeria. We do respect the energy and effort it takes to attend, and do what we can on this end to make it possible for you.

fesmith
The Toolmaking Workshop has one space left, and the Power Hammer Class is going too--think of "Free-form forging" as sculpting under the power hammer. There are still spaces for the two Ergonomic Hand Hammer workshops, where you learn how to save your body and forge with less heats. I have seen demonstrators put a piece back in the forge again and again simply because they did not know how to effectively swing the hammer or how to use the hammer and anvil faces to best effect. This is a chance to learn from the blacksmith innovator who recently re-designed the German blacksmithing program, and that says a lot. Registration and more info online at www.centerformetalarts.com. Talk to us, and we'll help you figure out how to make it possible to be here to study with Hofi. rthibeau
what are the hours for Oct 9 - 13 that we need to be there?
fesmith
The class will be full days...I'll know exact start and end times shortly. The Hand Hammer Workshop will have one of Hofi's classic hand-drawn notebooks to put down notes and scorch marks :) to remind you later about details of technique. There is more in the notebooks than Hofi will cover.
firebug
This is a fantastic opportunity to learn the cornerstone to your smithing, hammer swing. I have studied under Master Hofi while taking his classes in North Carolina and New York many times. I also went to his smithy in Israel and studied one on one with him for two weeks so I am speaking from experience here. Once while attending the hand hammer class in New York there was a German Master Blacksmith attending the same class. To be a Master Blacksmith in Germany you must attend a Blacksmithing College basically, for around 4-5 years. Along with about 4 years of apprenticeship. There are tests along the way as well. You cannot own your own blacksmith shop unless you are a Master Blacksmith in Germany. So to say this guy was a well educated blacksmith is putting it lightly. He and I were going to lunch on break and he is speaking in his accent, Master Hofi is traumatizing me. I said what do you mean? He said everything that Hofi was teaching us was exactly opposite of what he was taught, but it worked better. So here is this very well educated German Master Blacksmith saying the Hofi method worked better than what he was taught. By attending classes with Master Hofi my blacksmithing capabilities have ALWAYS surpassed my experience.
fesmith
The Toolmaking Class is filled, and there will be some high caliber blacksmiths attending. There is one space left in the Power Hammer workshop Oct 19-20. Interesting, from the blacksmith's point of view is that Free-Form Forging was picked up by a talented sculptor as a way to further develop the lines of his forms, so I know there will be opportunities to learn from each other as well as from Hofi in the small class groups. The two Ergonomic Hand Hammer classes are filling but still have openings. To encourage folks from a distance to think of coming out, we are offering a "Car Pool Discount"....register and ride with 2+ other smiths for a $40 discount off the workshop for each of you. Talk to us at info@centerformetalarts.com. For the Ironfest with Uri Hofi on Columbus Day, October 14, we are also offering a "Car Pool Discount". Check with me via email for details. Registration is on the website www.centerformetalarts.com, or if you prefer, mail to PO Box 30, Chester NY 10918.
fesmith
UPDATE for A BLACKSMITH'S OCTOBER with Uri Hofi: There is now a wait list for the Toolmaking and the Power Hammer Workshops, and there will be a mix of some fine blacksmiths and newcomers bringing their sculptural and design expertise to learning how Hofi's classes can propel their own work forward. I'm looking forward to seeing the action in these two filled workshops. There is still space in the Ergonomic Hand Hammer Workshops (October 9-11 and Oct 16-18). If you ever wanted to kick your hammer skills into top performance, here is your chance to study with Hofi. There are folks whose careers have kicked into gear, or gone in new directions....some coming back just to celebrate where a Hofi class has taken them, some to visit an old friend, and some with open minds to see what Hofi's techniques can teach them as they try to make a go of working with metal. It's all here for you....open spaces left in the two Ergonomic Hand Hammer workshops. (Registration is online at www.centerformetalarts.com) And if you are within driving distance of the Center for Metal Arts in downstate NY, do come for the Ironfest of Hofi demos and festivities on Columbus Day, October 14! Register ahead if possible....it will help us plan the day and lunch for all. Email me (info@centerformetalarts.com) if you have questions about anything from transportation to the best places to stay. This Blacksmith's October will be one to remember, and I want you to be able to say you were there.
