joshua.M Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 I have been offered a Hercules power hammer for $500. The owner sais it needs work (new motor set up)and that it is around a 50-60lb ram and has been outside for this winter. It is the first hammer that is local that i can afford. I'll get some pictures for you guys soon! any advise is very welcome, i will try to answer any questions as well as I can. Josh Quote
nonjic Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 Sounds to me like hes only asking the scrap price, ie all it is really costing you is the transport, I would bite his hand off :D Quote
basher Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 yup, they are a powerfull hammer, 150lb and one piece.I found mine a little too stompy for very fine work. Quote
r smith Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 Jump on it, just be careful not to break your arm getting your money out of your pocket too fast :o . A friend of mine got a small helve hammer that had no motor and needed lots of work for about $750 if I remember correctly. He may also have other stuff you "need" when you pick it up so be sure to have extra cash with you. Good luck :D Quote
iron woodrow Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 you have got yourself a good deal! And if a better one comes along, you have an asset that very well might pay for its own replacement. :) Quote
joshua.M Posted March 12, 2012 Author Posted March 12, 2012 wht size of motor would i need to run this hammer? i am trying to figure costs to get it up and running Quote
dablacksmith Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 if its a 50 lbr a 2 hp motor should run it fine .... but ide get it home as soon as you can and go from there... Quote
iron woodrow Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 strike while the iron is hot! The motor cost will be nothing once you have it! Quote
Blacksmith Johnny Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 Dont let it pass finding a hammer local is a real bonus in time and money saved. Quote
Yetti Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 at the worst you might have to convert it from 3 phase. thats not bad Quote
ianinsa Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 IT SOUNDS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE! so get it fast, you will easilly be able to sell it on if you want to upgrade later, I don't know the product but 2HP is nothing its like a lawn mower's power. Quote
joshua.M Posted March 18, 2012 Author Posted March 18, 2012 WELL!? ill second that! I havn't been able to get a response from him, but it is reserved for me until i say i cant take it. Now i need to figure out the motor and linkage Quote
coolhand Posted March 18, 2012 Posted March 18, 2012 Motor and linkage are the easy part. Go get that hammer! Quote
r smith Posted March 18, 2012 Posted March 18, 2012 Motor and linkage are the easy part. Go get that hammer! I think the seller realized it is a good thing and got cold feet and is avoiding selling for cheap. Dont hesitate, Good Luck Joshua Quote
iron woodrow Posted March 18, 2012 Posted March 18, 2012 DO NOT THINK ABOUT ANYTHING!!!! just knock on his door till you get it!!!!!! Quote
basher Posted March 18, 2012 Posted March 18, 2012 I had my Hercules running on 7.5hp. which is about rite . although you could go less or double up a couple of 3hp motors. the general rule is 5hp per hundred weight . Although in my experience you can often get away with less on mechanicals (I have had a goliath, the little brother to the herculies and a 60lb er running on 2x 1/2 hp motors and a jack shaft.) I second the jump in and get it call. check wear on the top flywheel to axle bearing and the two top bearings .(these are the most expensive fix) tightness of the arm bearings and pins is nice but an easy fix if not so good. r smith Posted April 4, 2012 Posted April 4, 2012 Maybe his wife will answer the phone, then you can tell her you want to buy it and is he available to talk. She, if like most wives will tell to get rid of the junk. :D . Other option is to show up with the CASH in hand. Good luck smith out Quote
