March 5, 201115 yr First one I've ever seen, well technically second, about 30 feet ahead of this one I found one that was rusted past fixing. This one cost me $35, works fine. I got the rusted one too... The leg has been repaired with a section of pipe though. A little unsightly.
March 6, 201115 yr That's a 17th century style vise with all the fittings replaced with modern arc welded improvised replacements. It will work well for your first vise and these repairs in no way impair the functionality of this vise its just not original.
March 6, 201115 yr Another thing of note about this vise is that it was originally made as a finishers vise or filing vise. The high jaws with that lack the curve of heavier forging style vises shows this.

April 7, 201115 yr The legs don't support that dating. As with many things in smithing good designs seem to keep on being used *forever*.
