making bronze
GhostTownForge replied to GhostTownForge's topic in Smelting, Melting, Foundry, and Casting
Our college has a program where you can check out one free class, but I don't know what lessons they have. It might be worth it to check it out. -

I do have safety equipment, but I was wondering if I should wear gloves because I have heard that leather gloves can shrink onto your hands -

But if I don't try, I'll never learn, correct? I don't want to sound disrespectful, but I'm trying to learn to cast, and it seems that nobody wants me to. Thanks for the input, everybody. Sorry if I sound ungrateful, but I'm just trying to learn to cast. -

I'm going to do it, but I'd like to know how. "There is a first time for everything." -

Sorry, that's a typo. I meant to say casting. I want to make my own bronze because I'm making a biblical replica for my pastor and want it to be as accurate as possible. -

Thanks! I want to make a bowl, but I thought it would be best to start with a plate poured into an open mold because I heard that thin sections could harden before fully being poured. -
I know this is a smelting question, but I'm making a bronze plate and want to know the best percentage of copper to tin. This is my first time casting something, so I would appreciate any tips.

First thing I've ever forged at home and I'm pretty happy with it. Fresh out of the forge to! (I used the Mr. volcano two burner gas forge to make it and I would TOTALY recommend it!) -
Thomas, I should be there at about 12ish, so, yes.

Mostly soft but I think it has a little bit of hard coal in it. Charles, thanks for telling me something that isn't wrong about my forge! Is there any way I can get lump charcoal easily?

would it be easier to just buy a propane forge? those seem a lot more space efficient.

I have tried several different things but my forge just doesn't seem to keep heat. The hottest metal gets is a dull red. Am I doing something wrong? The inside coating is plaster of Paris and sand, which I've been told can suck up a lot of heat. Is that true? I've spent 4 months trying to get this to work but I'm thinking about giving up and getting a propane forge.

The problem with mine is that it isn't big enough to keep the heat and get any hotter than a dull red hot, and I don't really have the room to get a large enough forge.
