    Kind of like this? I'm a amazed at how solid an anvil this turned out to be. An 18 inch section might be to long. I have rounded the center web since taking the picture.

    Rick, Got any pictures from the side? i was trying to figure out how the piece that is the hammer is guided. I built mine from scratch without plans so I get a kick out of seeing others. So it looks like the idler is the base? That mite help to make it more stable with all that weight down low, most I've seen use a 1/2 inch plate.

    You can tell that's an old thermometer. No celsius on it.

    Daswulf I can see using a front rim from a little girls bike for the head. That's a little tricky welding bushings and nuts on to those spokes. I like the concept.

    Randy, thats a good score on round stock. I used some to make hanging swivel hooks. Gazz, I'm thinking draw knife when I look at the file.

    Nice to see all this activity. Worked on a wood stove/fire place tool hanger yesterday. The intent is to wind up with something that looks like a viking long ship. Its got a ways to go, probably to many times in the oxidizing? fire. Lot a scale on the surface.

    This is the 400th anniversary of Thanksgiving. I just thought that was an interesting fact.

    Finished recycling a claw hammer into a handled punch. Whittled a piece of kindling, I think it was kiln dried fur for the handle.

    Wow DHarris sorry to hear you got banged up so badly. Started drawing out a claw hammer into what will be a handled punch.. And finished a couple of double hooks..

    Received 2 pints of ribbon burner refractory and 1/4 inch needle valve from the internet.

    Being that Bluerooster broke the ice with his dragon sculpture made from rebar, nice detail by the way. Here is a scull I sculpted from 1 inch rebar awhile ago. Probably could of found easier material to work with.

    I had this fabricated anvil on a wooden stand i made from 4x4's for quite a while. Always had to fiddle with it to keep it from rocking. This 3 leg stand I just finished feels so much more solid.

    No limits to what you can do with blacksmithing.... One more thing made from 5/8" round stock.

    Jobteil, Les Yes, I noticed the steel needs to be clean. Some scale helps the look, like with those roses. But that definitely takes practice to get the right balance. Very nice Les. How long do you wait before brushing?

    Billy I'm not convinced my technique will work just yet. But, poring muratic acid over item then rinse with copper sulfate granules mixed with water. Doing this cold. Using just the copper sulfate, the finish rubs off.

    Experimenting with copper finish. Glad I did it outside, muriatic acid is nasty stuff.

    I can see it on a bumper sticker or t-shirt. If we learn from our mistakes, I should be omniscient. Made a handled punch from a small ball peen.

    Thanks Billy, I've seen handled punches made from a ball peen, not much on claw hammers.

    I used 1 inch shaft. But I built mine the hard way without any plans. Never had a set of plans because I couldn't find them online at the time. Guessing a bolt is used because it would be easier to line up. I don't recommend using 5 inch pipe crammed full of 1 inch rebar for an anvil but I wanted to get the project done, since then I acquired some 5 inch by 30 inch round bar that i'll replace it with.

    Das, I'll be giving that a try. There is a video of dog being made from one. Just wondering if anyone has had any luck reforging one into a handled hot chisel.

    I frequently check out a place that recycles building materials. I'm not sure what to do with the claw hammers but for $5.00, what the heck.
