  1. I can't find a picture to post that doesn't present copyright issues but the doorknocker on Highclere castle is pretty unique. Search door knocker on Highclere castle. It's apparently well known. Pnut
  2. I used to have chows. With long hair Spitz type dogs you just have to resign yourself to a little hair on every single thing you own. Pnut Or a lot of hair on every single thing you own
  3. No just weird hours. I was living with my sister who is a baker. She'd get up at two in the morning so I'd get up too. Can't seem to get back to a normal schedule now. They have the greatest smiles. Pnut
  4. As late as May 2018 alzdiscovery.org published a study looking at occupational and daily exposure from antiperspirant and antacids to aluminum and the correlation between Alzheimer's and early onset dementia. All sources are listed in the article. It's a horror show watching a loved one eaten away by it. Pnut I've not been able to find a conclusive answer. There's studies showing both results. Also studies showing too much OR too little zinc as a contributing factor. So the jury is still out. I worked for two years casting engine blocks from Al and Alzheimer's runs in the family. I've been looking at this for quite a while and there's no consensus. The evidence is pointing to a relationship between Al and dementia but the mechanism by which Al is contributing seems to be what the science can't agree upon.
  5. I lived near a minor league baseball stadium before I moved to my current residence. My cat hated the "Friday Night Fireworks" show they put on after every Friday home game. She would hide in the closet. It was about a twenty minute display and about five minutes of that was continuous bangs during the "finale". There's a cat hanging around now that isn't afraid whatsoever of banging and sparks. He sits a respectful distance away when I'm at the forge. He just wants to be near someone. Unfortunately NO PETS where I live except stinkbugs and house centipedes. Pnut I'll post a picture of the kitty next time he's around.
  6. Marc 1and Aus, Here in the states the American alligator was on the endangered species list. After the population grew to a sustainable size hunting was allowed once again. So maybe there's hope for you punters down under. Can you apply for a nuisance animal cull permit? Here you can get them for nuisance bears, mountain lions in their range even deer out of season. Coyotes are open for year round hunting. I like coyotes though so it would have to be a REAL pest for me to kill one. I had a coy dog for about ten years. Oh yeah our cousin to your redback spider, the black widow won't kill you but it hurts enough to make you want to die. I know from hard experience. In the last ten years or so I've seen a couple news reports of sharks found in the Ohio River near Cincinnati. Always juvenile and always in extremely poor health. I don't remember what kind of sharks they were.
  7. You said you have a bunch of 2x lumber. If you go with an aluminum shed you can frame the inside to stiffen it up a bit. Pnut
  8. There's a book titled elementary forge practice I think his first name is David. I'm sure the last name is Harcourt that matches the description of the book described by the op. You can download a free PDF file from woodworkslibrary.com Pnut
  9. Yep, KDFWR has done a great job with the reintroduction. It's still a lottery hunt though. I don't know anyone who has gotten a tag. I don't know many elk hunters either. Could be why. Pnut
  10. Another thing my Granny said to me all the time growing up, "Pity is free, you have to earn admiration." Pnut (Mike) Largest elk herd east of the Rocky Mountains
  11. Haha. Nope, and it was actually about two miles from the railroad tracks. You could see them from the overlook looking at the Cincinnati skyline though. That's a shame. That would be a prize winning mullet. Worthy of the king of mullets Mr. Billy Ray Cyrus himself. Pnut (Mike)
  12. They certainly do look heavy. Nice and robust.
  13. Some use will polish the face right up. Thin coat of blo and you're in business. Looks to be in pretty good shape. Lots of miles left on it. Use it in good health. Pnut (Mike)
  14. I worked setting up the stage and seating at an Arlo Guthrie concert in about 1993 in Covington KY. Got to eat dinner with him and the rest of the crew. It was at the ampitheatre in Devou park. Pnut (Mike) Sorry to hear about the shop wall. At least it wasn't worse. A few places took a pretty hard hit. Glad to hear you're safe.
  15. Pr3ssure, check Walmart or other big box stores. They sell big jugs of oil for deep fryers. Maybe even a McDonald's if you know someone who works there you could maybe get free oil. You'd have to filter it though. Pnut (Mike) It'll smell like fries when you quench your stock. Mmmmm fries
  16. At least till he does some real , meaning not YouTube research. Pnut (Mike) A crucible failure or some other such catastrophe can put a damper on the rest of your day.
  17. Depending on the steel, commonly available oils are adequate and probably much cheaper. Do you plan on doing production smithing or professional bladesmithing? Unless you run across a can't pass it up deal I'd probably just get some canola or similar. I searched "steel quenchant for sale" and got a bunch of hits. Acculube looked the most promising. Also Brownells sells quench oil. Pnut (Mike)
  18. You could cover the entire table in bricks. That would make it easier to coke the green coal. You want about four inches of coke under the work and about two above. You need to figure a way to bring the walls of the firepot to that height the bricks seem like they would work, but If they're concrete pavers they may spall. You might be better off with clay bricks or hard firebrick for the firepot. Then fill in the rest of the table with bricks or even clay from the backyard. You could also fill the whole table with clay to bring the depth of the firepot to about four or five inches. Pnut (Mike)
  19. Les L, I'm on my phone so maybe I can't see it. Is there anything holding it to the stand or is it just the weight of the anvil? Pnut (Mike)
  20. I too grew up on the railroad tracks. There is a main line about 100 feet from the front porch of my old house. I played on the tracks everyday. I have a friend with only one arm and I was shot at with rock salt numerous times and hit once. Not pleasant. Jlpservices you are indeed correct that after 911 there's more security and steeper fines/jail terms handed out for criminal trespassing on RR property. Removing something from a right of way can be prosecuted federally nowadays. Keep these things in mind before you go on RR property. I don't have a thousand dollars and or 11 months 29 days to sit in jail. Those are the penalties in numerous states. It's different I'm sure in some states but probably something comparable. You can't forge in a jail cell. I also have a bunch of family who does or did work for the railroad and I myself worked for a railroad for a time. Hitting a pedestrian is traumatizing to the person doing the hitting also. Pnut (Mike) Jlpservices I have had run ins with the police while taking pictures of architecture and engineering projects due to the worry of terrorism. It was much worse for a few years following 911 and has gotten less frequent but I still have the occasional interaction with L.E.O.'s. I understand why they would be curious to see what someone is doing taking photos of infrastructure , but I also have seen it taken way too far. Better safe than sorry I guess. Pnut (Mike)
  21. As a project I'm sure it would be quite a challenge. Above my pay grade for sure. I checked your profile and I figured you probably have multiple anvils. I'm using a vertical rail so a horn and hardy hole would be a welcome tool for maybe fifty or sixty dollars. 295 seems to be outrageous. I don't know the market in the SW but that seems like a lot for a project. Although it would be a good skill to have in your back pocket. Good luck either way. Pnut (Mike)
  22. I just seen the 295$ price tag on it. I would say NO it's not worth it. I'd pay fifty bucks for it and not a penny more. You can probably find a usable anvil for 300 dollars.
  23. Horn and hardy looks good. It's going to take a lot of time and consumables to fix it I'd imagine. There's a method of repair I can't think of the guys name. I'm sure someone will chime in with it soon. If not I might be able to get my scrambled brains to work well enough to remember and I'll post it. Pnut (Mike) Robert Gunter When my brain fails Google works Is it cheap? Pnut (Mike)
