  1. So I decided to make an electrolysis tank and try it out, I got a big tub from Walmart and grabbed 2 peices of stainless from work. Worked out pretty good! Made wire wheeling this thing a dream! Before and after pics, 152 lb Budden
  2. The larger shelf of top is good idea. My plan right now is to leave it how it is. I found that base plate at work with the holes already in it. When I get a more permanent workshop I plan to bolt it to the floor.

    Post vice stand

Made a stand for this bad boy. Solid 3x3 square stock for the neck, bottom plate is 3/4 and the top is 3/8. Not sure how much it all weighs but it's pretty solid.
  4. Third number is remainder pounds. So 23 pounds, and when I said smooth I didn't mean litteraly how smooth it was just touching it. Like the lines of the feet the heel and horn, it just looks smoother. Cleaner lines I should say
  5. The weight on peter wrights is in the English hundredweights. First number being that number multiplied by 112, Second by 28 i believe, and the third is just the remainder weight left. So that number multiplied by 1. Before 1910 They did not have to put England in the name, but just what i've seen. From the ones i have seen anyways. They look shorter, a bit bulkier, and a little bit rougher. that one seems a bit taller and lengthier. Seems smoother too, but like i said i could be wrong about the date but if i had to make a guess that would be mine. As for the "m" stamped below, im stumped, no idea lol... and the "rune" you talked about, i think that's just a chisel mark.
  6. Looks like a Peter Wright to me. The only thing i find strange is the visible top plate. Peter wright was very good at covering that up. According to the weight stamp, she weighs 247lbs. The style seems to be after 1910, Although i cant see the stamp after 1910 they were required to stamp England in their anvils. Maybe someone who is more knowledgeable on Pete's can tell you for sure what the date is. Congrats on the anvil, awesome scrap yard find!
  7. Why do you say "clearly it's a Vulcan"? From what I thought Vulcans, like the one in the background from one of those pictures up there are cast iron. Sheffields from what I know could come from a couple different origins but some were made by mousehole which are forged wrought. According to postman the best way to tell if it is a mouse hole or not. There should be a pointed ridge from the back leading to the front of the horn on the underside. I don't have my anvil book on me to do some more digging. Vulcans are definitely American cast iron anvils. Vulcan and Sheffield or mouse hole are 2 totally different style anvils. Correct me if I'm mistaken but this is what I thought.
  8. It's pretty rough on the outside. There is still cross hatches in the jaws though, itle make me a good vice if I ever get to build a stand for it.
  9. So I scored a 7 inch post vice the other day. Unsure of its identification. Not too knowledgable on vices. The only thing stamped I could find was a 50 with a line under it. After I got the 100 years of rust broke loose it worked just fine lol. I'll get a picture of the stamp when I get home. I thought I had one.
  10. Oh okay. Yeah wasn't sure about those. Thanks!
  11. Say hello to the newest addition to the family! She still needs cleaned up. Ring like church bell! It's the first hay Budden I've bought. Got a good price so I couldn't pass it up. Serial number 218974 D.O.B 1914. There's a couple of unknown stamps on it though. Anybody seen anything like this from the factory?
  12. I've done a few. I'd like to do more. But it's not everyday I find people needing anvil repair lol.
  13. How much rod did you burn in that sucker? And how bad was it damaged? If you can post a picture of the damage before you repaired it. To get the best rebound usually you build a butter layer of 7018, that hard facing rod does work harden. What you should have done was heated it up to 350 400. Make maybe a weld or two. Stick it back on your oven and wait awhile for your temp to come back down. It takes forever but that way your sure you don't ever put too much heat into the peice. Even though you said you did it with a propane weed burner. The only reason for pre heating and post heating is to prevent stress cracking. When the weld cools down it gets super hard and stress is build up. You can use different methods of peening to relieve stress. If the damage wasn't extremely bad I would have done it entirely with 10018. I wouldn't use hard facing rod unless your doing extensive work. The 10018 has a higher tensile strength then 7018 and the carbon content of the rod isn't as high. Everything you can do to prevent cracking without preheating awhole lot.
  14. Pretty much Thomas. I more less was just wanting some wiser opinions, and I didn't know if the price seemed right. I definitely do have anvil envy (never thought a chunk of metal would ever attract me so much) but I'll probably be on the hunt for a powder hammer.
  15. I'm not 100% new to the game. I just recently sold all my anvils. Long ass story. Got offers I couldn't resist. Like 700$ for a broken at the waste repaired by me eith terrible edges. I have anvil disease. And I've always wanted a big bastard. I know it may be unwise. And it isn't it perfect shape. But I LOVE arm and hammer. And I feel as if I'll never one another one this big
  16. So. If you were in a situation like me. Just have exactly 4K saved up. I'm 19 years old. So I don't have any bills but insurance. Would you but the thing? I can always make more money. But finding another one like this. I'm not sure if I can. Or it I can how long would it take?
  17. Ohhhhh! I thought you meant around the southwest MO region. My bad.
  18. I think I know what skating rink your talking about. Or at least I think. Got mangled up by the tornado? Use to go there in my younger days. But thanks! I'll see what I can pull up
  19. That's what I've been trying to too. Talk to more people. Talk around. But not a whole lot so far. And actually I live in the old mining towns. Where would be a place to check you think?
  20. Thanks guys. I'm from southwest Missouri. I don't need an anvil this big. I just want one. And the dude is firm 4K. But cash talks. I'll get some closer pictures. And that's a beautiful #527! I want it bad. From my understanding the big arm and hammers and rare, and I love em. Just 4gs is so steep, I got the cash. But I could also get a power hammer for that. Like you said. Where are the places with cheap anvil prices? Because I haven't found them cheap anywhere. I'm willing to drive cross country.
  21. So this is my first post. I've read stuff from this website. Just finally decided to make my own account. So I was checking out some anvils a guy had. When I got there I had never seen so many 500+ pounders in my life. None of them were for sale of course except the arm and hammer. He was 4 grams for this thing. The brand is still visible. So is the serial number ect. The anvil was produced around the time of world war 2. When they were welding the waists. The only other arm and hammer i have found that was close to this big was a #527. (Found reading different forums on this website) and I fell in love with it. But 4 grand seems so steep. Opinions?
