Need opinion on sparks so here...sparks look same about 3 feet out...if that helps.. would it make good knife stock? If its good steel..I don't want to waste it until I get "good" at something its angled at table, would shoot about 3 ft out otherwise
-
What would it be good for? I know this is vague...looks like it is from a bridge or maybe some kind of water company part... two plus inches thick maybe 3 feet long bolts.. it was in the way so I have to take a chop saw to it just to move it...took over 30 minutes to cut 4 bolts I had to rock bolts back and forth just to get them cut...xxxxxxx hard steel.. So back to this....what is it good for? Ideas? Opinions?

Moving to SoCal from Pa, Pricing Questions
b4utoo replied to IRTim's topic in Blacksmithing, General Discussion
Well its just hit and miss here in SoCal... I haven't paid over $2.50 a pound for decent anvils here....just have to be patient...the anvils that are listed higher($4+ range) are usually misinformed and still have the anvils... I know a guy that has them for sale at $4 a pound and still can't move them (great condition) BUT if you were to set up a auction thats well advertised, who knows.... There is really just one source for coal in my area...thats lee greens place in yucaipa...(think i got his name right) There is a few antique places here on route 66 that can sell ice to eskimos ...(tourist suckers buy anything inflated) -
Well I should of shopped around from the begining.... You have Patton Steel, Endura Steel, and Apple Valley Steel yard.... Patton is small place but real easy to figure out if they have what you want. Endura has big yard...seems you have to wait a lot longer anything including most basic stuff and prices are comparable to Patton maybe a bit cheaper. I went to Apple valley steel yard today and it was almost half the price of the other yards... I was happy and mad at same time... I walked in ask for what I wanted and paid by the time I pulled my truck up it was loaded and I left... Anyone in high desert ca...consider making the trip to A.V. yard... might be worth it. I paid $19 for a 20ft piece of steel at Patton and a little over $10 bucks for the same at A.V.....just a example.

Unless you are looking just for a original part....do you have a place like "Nutty Bolts" or "Bolts & Fasteners" which specialize just in those things that might have something that might work for you? This could just be obvious...but if not just mentioning it...I had no idea until someone told me about them and they have way out specialty stuff....Just bring them a idea of what you're looking for...

Going to keep a couple and trade/sell the rest for something I can use.... Had high hopes of refurbishing them...but no time really... Would happily trade away for some good tongs lol

Corner of my yard....Forgot I had it....Plugged it in...tripped plug...Guess I need to trouble shoot....Anyone have any info on it? Its electric obviously... Found a Champion blower just like it aswell....but that needs more work. The desert tried to reclaim them...almost buried

Well I spent last 3 days cleaning my property up (not including post vises)....I kept finding vises I "misplaced"...most picked up in package deals...I have my favorites so I kept tossing them here and there....Wilton in bottom left is huge...over 70lbs...can't tell from pic but the machinist vise and red wilton bullet vise's in back are almost as heavy but not as big... Found alot of cool stuff but figured just post the vises for now...

It's in my sights one day... Paid I think $1600 total...for Cutter & Consumables( All hypertherm) Going to sell alot of "junk" soon...maybe I can make room for it.. I need to learn how to use it properly first...thought I would mention this lol
-
Hypertherm Powermax 65..(used)..(with a ton of consumables) Curious does anyone have a plasma cutter and what they use theirs for (forging / smithing related) Was going to get a small basic one but was really cheap compared to others I have found. Bought within minutes of listing. So I jumped. (I do need to upgrade to a 60 gallon air compressor now though to run it my smalled craftsman professional barely does the job)

I just can say what I would do...I would pick any method that I wanted...since I can't really make it worse...and practice it on that anvil...Maybe it works maybe it doesn't....but someone would be happy with whatever is left from said experiment...if they have no anvil at all...I have a anvil with a new face plate...works great. I didn't do it though...came that way....but up to you which way you choose to go....now if you want a experienced answer read above mine...mine is just inexperienced opinion.

At some point you just have to accept it as ....a conversation piece...Shape would lose its meaning by purpose...I'm guessing about 750lbs would be a good cut off point See we are "Conversing" lol But that 750 is pretty cool so bumping up my previous weight estimate of reasonable anvil shape usage

Didn't think of a edging tool, but makes sense... What about hammer with small point...? These came from a ranch type house in high desert small blacksmith shop...nothing looked to be used really in years...
