  1. Mine has the same shelf but I mounted it so that a firebrick, lying flat, is just 1/8 inch below the forge floor. The bricks take the heat instead of the shelf. I also made my shelf the same width as two firebricks end to end. That provides a wide enough base to stack firebricks on top of the shelf and reduce the opening. Dave
  2. I like the design and the style. Looks like a perfectly usable knife to me. I have maybe a dozen of my first knives all over my shop. When I start having problems with forging or grinding I take a couple minutes and look at a couple of them. I always go back to work smiling. Do get that tempered- This is supposed to be fun- not dangerous. Keep at it- you have some talent for it. Dave

  5. I had some planer blades given to me several years ago. NOTHING I did would soften that steel or make it workable. Never again! The amount of work I put into trying to somehow use that 'free' steel taught me to never use anything I could not identify and get specs on. Dave

  9. Why not put it on Craig's List? Take that money and buy scrap or stock or a huge pile of Twinkies :) I am currently searching for a large propane tank for outside the shop. Tired of dragging the bottles back and forth as they get emptied out in the forge. I would come look if you weren't so far away! Dave

  12. My giant work-horse post vice [8 inch jaws] came with a bent mount that would not tighten up. Took it to a good friends shop and he cut me out a one-piece mount in the shape of a crow's head. Welded on a 90 degree mount after drilling and went to the local nut and bolt place and bought a u bolt the size I needed and put everything back together. Works great and I smile every time I see that old crow there. Be a little creative- have some fun- get your vice working! Dave
  13. I have my compressor and shop vacs outside in a shed. Sure not gonna bring a jackhammer inside! Gives me a headache just to think of it. Dave

  15. Picked up the induction forge from Larry. He had it all set up and running when I got there. We unhooked the water lines and home I went. Picked up a HF Propylene cart and set it up. Will pick up a wall plug-end that matches my 220 outlets in the morning at Home Depot and fire it off! Larry was a huge help and was super about explaining what I need to do AND not do. He made this completely painless and very simple. Will post again after I have actually used it to do some work :) Dave

  18. I see so muck exceptional work here that I run out of original adjectives. I really like your piece and your rendition of Brian's cranes is very well done. Dave
  19. When welding solid material the brushing takes it right off. Did some cable Damascus and that cleaned up easily with just brushing. Did a few combination billets with farrier file cores and some higher contrast layers added. That all worked clean with a quick swipe with the wire brush. I was welding up some chainsaw chain and the flux and other nastiness collected in the voids. The more I worked the steel down the thicker [as in less runny] that gunk got. When I try to brush it the brush gets sticky and is a huge mess to clean up after removing just a little of the goo. It would probably take at least 2 dozen new brushes to clean it up. I am trying to see a way to boil the [2] billets in something I never want to see again when finished. I will probably just toss them into the Muratic acid and check them once a day for a week or sr and see what happens.   21. The only source for a small amount that I could find was K&G, $55 for a quart, ground shipped only. Does anyone have a source for pints, maybe? Dave
