  1. We did a couple with hammer and anvil, but would like to gear up to make a bunch of them and have the bending part go a bit faster.
  2. I have a HF bender, but I don't know if it will be best solution to my job. I need to bend some 3/16x3/4 the hard way in just about same radius as a 55 gal. drum. My client builds earthen baking ovens with 55gal drum as core. The 3/16x3/4 is to stiffen up the edge of the door to the oven. Any ideas out there? This is actual picture of one of their stoves. You can find more neat stuff at: www.firespeaking.com
  3. Fe-Wood: Tried to send you an email but it says you "can't receive any more emails"??? Some folks get it and some don't man.. I tried for years to convince people that we weren't given our time on Earth to abuse it,but to try to leave it better than we found it!! Slowing down on that and just trying to keep my own footprint to a minimum and hope my kids do the same. See you're in Grass Valley. Traveled there from my ranch in NE Nevada for a fiddle playing job about thirty years ago. My how time flies... Eric Sprado spradoeric@gmail.com if you want to email me....
  4. Avadon: WHAT HOA are you moving in to? I live in Deadwood-50minutes from Eugene and have had a business in Eugene for over twenty years. I drove through Creswell the other day on business and didn't see much of what you described. There is one section of town like that, but most towns have a slummy area somewhere. There are lots of nice rural areas out here with absolutely no CCR's. If you're not committed yet I'd be glad to show you around.. At any rate-give me a call and come play in my shop... 541 964 3224. 5. Looks good deal to me! Buying just what you want is a nice feeling.Shipping is a HUGE deal these days. I used to buy and sell quite a few anvils but driving a hundred miles each way these days sure adds to the price.
  6. Clinton: Thanks for bringing up Stop Drop and Roll!!! When I was welding in Kodiak a fellow started cutting on a barrel that he had NO IDEA what was in it. He went up in flames and started running. A fellow who was very fast and athletic tackled him and rolled but it was too late: He didn't make it!!! So-for those of you who hadn't heard it-listen to Clinton... STOP DROP AND ROLL!!!
  7. John: I think it is irreparable. I'll come down from Eugene and take it off of your hands. I only have your health in mind. Eric Sprado
  8. For you experts who use plain rod for rivets: Do you countersink a spot in the wood for the rod(rivet) to expand or does it just make its own spot? I asked this somewhere else on here but can't seem to find it... Old age I guess. Or maybe I've always been absent minded...
  9. Reefer: What sort of tool holder did you make for that nice little "air over hydraulic" press? thanks, Eric S.
  10. With the standard two piece cutlery rivets, how much overlap do I need to allow for? In other words-how far does the one side need to go into the other for a strong joint? thanks, Eric
  11. Venturi action is probably one of those "simpler is more complex" deals. I have fire welded in a rather large propane forge fed by only ONE of Art Anderson's (of LOLO Mont.)venturi burners. One of the better venturi farriers' forges is made in the Portland Or. area. The builder, sort of an arrogant fellow, makes a BIG deal about his specially designed venturis. When I was in Canada a while back I saw his "specially engineered"(and darned expensive at his place)venturis on Canadian weed burner torches!!!!!!!Nice traditional tapered burner similar to ones on commercial stoves and furnaces! The Anderson powered forge that I have welded with is built like Grant shows his: The venturi comes up through the bottom of a fire brick lined table. The top is a half round piece of about10" of pipe lined with KO Wool. Actually the burner is at a slight angle. Flame swirls around and the gets REALLY hot. I'd be glad to post pictures of Art's simple burner if anybody is interested.
  12. Three hungry(actually well fed) barn cats cleaned out my shop when I bought the place about three years ago. Uhhhhh-cats are a pretty well established, environmentally sound, rodent cure.
  13. I get GenAire blowers from a local scrapper. They are GREAT
  14. Sid Suidmeier has a very lengthy discussion of fitting keys on the Little Giant web site: http://www.littlegianthammer.com/used.html Give it a try. Also-Sid is VERY helpful and willing to talk to you on the phone. That top key is a double angled wedge. Get on the site and call him!!!
  15. What sort of rivets are those that I see on basic old store bought kitchen knives like "Old Hickory" brand? Are they a two piece deal that you have to make a little countersink for? I'd like to make some nice simple kitchen knives for family for Christmas from some 5160 I have. Thanks for any help or ideas. Eric S.
  16. I've crawled under more than 10,000 head of horses so I guess I was a farrier... Any forge labeled as a "farrier" forge should be fully capable of raising steel to a welding heat as forge welding is part of the job. Should be sufficient for ANY thing you want to do as long as it will fit in the forge... OOPS guess Wesley and I must have pushed the button at the same time!!!!!There you have it....
  17. Double adjustable arms on my old 25LG help keep it coming down balanced. It didn't come with two. After-market rebuild.
  18. I vote with the guys saying open up top to match bottom and sleeve it to 1" and GO TO WORK... Simple,simple,simple...
  19. Are you talking SAWMILL type bandsaw blades or metal cutting bandsaw blades. The sawmill bandsaw blades available to us here in the Northwest are wonderful stock for knives. OOPS-Sorry. I just re-read your post and you did specify metal cutting blades. Anyway-the sawmill blades are pretty easy to come by here if anybody needs me to snoop around and get some chunks.
  20. Sounds like rod going from pedal to clutch arm is simply too long. No need to remove it to start with, just heat a six inch section with your torch and shorten it up by putting a kink in it. Probably against Sid's Rules but it worked for me. First I'd give Sid a call. He is absolutely gracious about talking you through LG problems. call: Sid Suedmeier at 402-873-6603 His Website: http://www.littlegianthammer.com/index.html
  21. Sorry: They built STEAM ENGINES!!!! for ships Worldwide.... The foray into power hammers seems to have been a VERY short and ill fated effort. Here's one of the brief descriptions from Wikipedia. Nice to see a building that old being revamped. http://www.encyclopediadubuque.org/index.php?title=NOVELTY_IRON_WORKS Here's list of ships they either fitted with engines or did the siding on: http://www.machine-history.com/node/515
  22. Must have been the first ironclad ship whichever it was. Read that in a brief "bio" of Novelty Iron Works last year. Let's Google it and see which ship it was..
  23. The " Novelty Ironworks" Hammer on Ebay is interesting. I just sold one last year. The Novelty Iron works folks only made 300 of these hammers. Their claim to fame was that the company made and installed the iron sides on "Old Ironsides". The power hammers were meant to be set up with four pieces of pipe for the stand. They were made to be portable so they could be packed in to mining camps on the back of a mule. Odd: With only three hundred made, I know of three here in Western Oregon.
  24. Someone had a post on bottle cap roses a while back and I can't seem to find it anywhere? Help? thanks, Eric S.
