  1. Hey Eddie, if the price is right on that used kit, then a replacement O2 cylinder with the proper pedigree is ~$200. So might be a good deal. propane cylinder is just a 20# gas grill tank...new filled for~$50 or refill for $20 or less. I bought new since I have no experience and wouldn't recognize issues with older kits that are obvious to old-timer. I think my forge just got replaced! Uh-oh, blasphemy!
  2. I really like that gate. Unique and beautiful.
  3. That looks really good. If I may ask, what does a project like that go for? And what portion is material? Thx Mike
  4. now i get it. thanks. sorry for mis-spelling Stephen.
  5. Thanks, Steven, yes i definitely need forge weld practice. can you maybe sketch up what you are talking about? i definitely don't follow the second half. or if you have pix or a link, even better. i didn't really expect the nail "loop cross" to stick as i didn't use any flux or clean it much...plus the overlap wasn't in close contact, but the torch gets it up to heat so easily i figured why not try.
  6. nice looking railings. many good comments in here. another approach, altho it might be too late now, is to extend the vertical piece thru the base plate and thru the slab. you could mortar or epoxy it into a drilled hole in the concrete. that way the 1" bar and slab take any stress from a fatty leaning on the railing, and the baseplate is basically for looks. You can tack on fake bolt heads to throw them off the track. i like the no fillet weld look, but does that gap hold water and rust faster? do you plan to fill it with paint or epoxy? Mike
  7. Hey storm crow Nice hawks as I have commented before... In your video you were hoarse, which reminded me of when I made my one & only kydex sheath. I used a belt sander to shape the sheath and the stink made my eyes burn and throat raw with coughing for days. If you are doing the same, be careful of that kydex dust.
  8. +1 on oxy- propane Last week i finally got my smith medium duty oxy propane system, with tanks, cart AND gas saver...got it put together and leak checked (watched the smithequipmenttv and prorancher videos ~10 times) last weekend. Today was my first use for heating. I used the cutting torch since I was making small stuff... Compared to my gas forge (homemade blown brickstack), it heats much faster and get to sparklers temp easily. It does spot heating way better than the forge of course. It also doesn't continuously blow huge quantities of super hot air, so i can pull the whole works into the garage and not melt my garage door insulation. And the gas saver is fantastic! Saves time and fuel. I rigged up a fat wire hook to hang it better on the gas saver arm. I made a garyhuston mini cross, a bodkin point, a nail-cross (also my first try at forge welding...fail) in an hour or so and hardly used any gas. Propane is cheap and a 150cf oxy fill is only $12. Small experience base so far, but it is looking like a good move! I have a small plate cutting job planned, expecting joy.
  9. Could retrofit into existing slab with a core drill and set-in...I like it
  10. I've been to a few demos and have 2 suggestions If you use a plexiglas shield, make sure it doesn't face a door or windows or public sees only glare and end up looking around the ends of the shield to see the action, defeating the safety intent. Also provide seats & leaning posts...most demos take longer than the attention span of kids, and if they're standing they won't stay around. Good luck
  11. I was just going to ask if anyone did a single-sided HC layer...good timing
  12. Chief i would latch onto some of those local experts and offer to be their unpaid slave in exchange for learning the skills. This works while you live at home. BTW everybody this is one of the best threads ever in this forum. nice job.
  13. i like everything but the base. my choice would be a spike to drive into the ground so it's invisible when installed.
  14. Wow, that's a lot of impressive work. it would take me a year to make all those and not that well either. I like the spike in the claw hammer, seems like a good idea for hammers & axes in general.
  15. Hey Josh that's a pretty cool handle. looks like it would fit very well with index finger in front of the spike, giving an excellent grip. and I like the blade shape also.
  16. that is really nice. I presume a patch is for muzzle-loading? The blade almost looks like damascus.
  17. Very well done. What do the chevron cuts do, or are they just for looks?
  18. i'll have to find the director's cut version. good info.
  19. ever seen this movie? i think it's a great classic. not only because a blacksmith is the hero, but because the reasonable men prevail over the religious extremists on both sides. i have seen it probably 5 times and will see it again.
  20. very nice piece! i would have left off the copper personally, but it does make it unique! love the laminated handle, probably super strong.
  21. page 28, fig 14...i learned a new way of upsetting!
  22. that is a very pretty axe. did you forge weld in a layered piece to achieve the edge pattern? i'm unclear on that. notice the term "bit", that means inserted a chunk of PW
