  1. Anybody got any pros or cons on Campbell Hausfeld compressors?
  2. Kudos, Rich, Glenn! You guys have hit the nail on the head. Thanks :)
  3. Marc, That's the way I remember it. "He died with his hammah in his han'". Check this out. Fun stuff John Henry - The Steel Driving Man
  4. Pretty sure he meant charcoal
  5. I worked with drills for a few years, both manual and automatic, including CNC. I have found that a constant feed appropriate to the sized bit and material being drilt (won't work in Scrabble, but I like it) is most important. Good bit + good speed + wrong feed = disaster. Too slow = high production cost. Too fast = bits for lunch.
  6. Just a thought. Cut chisel off at the back of the bad bevel, leaving a nice thick edge. thats how far back you need to grind anyway. Then heat treat and then grind/file/scrape/hone (what ever it takes ) for a proper bevel.
  7. I'm from Nebraska. What STATE are you from?
  8. Wicked, Robert! That would look good with a matching wood sheath :)
  9. Thinking of firing up the BBQ. Any ideas for a nice cut of FLANK?
  10. Ever since I came home from work and the ringing in my ears was the same pitch as the running water in the kitchen sink and it hurt, (yup. That's tinnitus), I have worn ear plugs when doing any work that produces as much or more noise than a vacuum cleaner. I wear the yellow foam ear plugs by E.A.R. E-A-R Hearing Protection Products Very comfortable and very effective!!!
  11. Ditto, Ed. You get well now, Ya hear?
  12. Its my favorite automobile brand. Call me anything but late to meals. My real name is Scott Scheer
  13. Multi plug adapters plugged into multi plug adapters plugged into multi plug adapters and the fifty power tools plugged in to the gob and all plugged into a 15 amp plug. "How come the lights dim when I turn on my gri-...??? Gosh. it sure got dark all the sudden!"
  14. I can't remember who (CurlyGeorge maybe??) but one of our members has a video on YouTube demonstrating hammering a 1/4" rod to white hot from cold. And no, it don't look easy With quick but heavy hammer blows and turning rod quickly, the end eventually gets red then turns to bright yellow to white in less than a minute. Edit note: What Ian said, LOL
  15. Thanks one and all for the greatly appreciated input. I'm on my way to go motor shopping, armed with this info I will probably shoot for 2 hp 220 volt for the amp savings. May be a little over kill, but as Tim "the Tool Man" Taylor says, "Errr Errr Arrrrrrrh!"
  16. The belt is 2" x 72". The 1/2 hp I'm using is easily bogged down. I have considered a 1.5 hp as well. It just depends on what I can find with the green I have in my pocket. LOL
  17. Jeep, I am in the process of restoring a badly stored Marine K-Bar. These knives had two different methods to attach the butt plate. Both methods were probably mechanized. The most common way custom knife makers use is to put threads on the end of the tang, normaly by silver soldering or brazing a short length of ready-rod on. A threaded sleeve is then soldered to the back side of the but plate which can now act like a nut on a bolt. Treated leather can then be stacked on the tang and compressed by the butt plate. This also hides the tang; hence the name "hidden tang." Another method to treat the leather washers I have been told about but have not tried yet is to stabilize in a vacuum chamber with cyanoacrylate or Super Glue for short. Leather becomes as machinable as hardwood. Guess which one I'm restoring;)
  18. Jr would that stand up to the constant but intermittent load put on a grinder?

    Gas Forges

Certainly going to get dust! I have considered this question (about fumes) inside my garage. I live in a split-entry where the garage is under bedrooms. Right now, my forge is on wheels and I roll it outside, but If I didn't rent I would build a stove hood like in a commercial kitchen with perhaps an exhaust fan in the hood. And yes, I forgot about the co detectors. I have one, I just take it for granted as it's never gone off :)
