  1. I reckon 3 days to get down to the hammer and 3 back, and maby an extra day if you miss the boat from the south island
  2. This hammer is forsale, looks like it has been out side for a wile, its about a weeks round trip to pick it up tho :(
  3. They come up for sale in NZ very often, you wouldn't pay more than $100 NZD for a mint one, saw 4 of them sell for under $30 each the otherday, I still wouldn't leve them outside
  4. you can pick those leg vices up for like $10 bucks
  5. I know someone who has two Massey slide hammers sitting out side think thats what they are called, they kind of look like a steam hammer with a guide halfway down
  6. Yes I think thats what happend and it was dumped at the tunnel, The history everyone tells it and is written in the books is that the boiler was ordered from england and there was a mixup somewhere, and it was too big for the train it was powering, and when they came to the first and only tunnle they dumped it off the train chassis But when I think about it the boiler is on the same side of the tunnel as the port and the mill, witch is about 3 miles, witch means they didn't get far at all, and there was no where to buld up a train as it is a very remot place, and the boiler is not a locomotive boiler or show any indercation it was fitted to a locomotive, witch means it was powering something at the mill and not a locomotive.
  7. It must have been powering the mill, as this is in a very remote place, now they want to protect this boiler and have put it on timbers, everyone thinks its from the train
  8. Lol they tryed to take it away 100 yers ago and thats befor the train line was ripped up and the bush covered everything
  9. Thanks for that info, its what I was looking for, I think I may have found the remains of the brick work, I was hoping I would find a steam hammer or something, Alot of people will be dissapointed when I brake the news to them its a stationary boiler
  10. There has been this old boiler lying on the side of an old train line for over 100 years close to my place, everyone says it was from a train witch didn't fit through the tunnel and was removed and dumped. but I don't think it is a locomotive boiler and it may not even be a boiler. it has no fire tubes or fire box, just has a single offset tube witch is huge There was an old timbermill up the track witch burned down in 1881, it must have been something they were trying to take away for scrap. I find it hard to beleave someone would drive there train up the track and when they found it wouldn't fit through the tunnel then remove the boiler and just dump it and then carry on. The middle photo I found with a similar riveted vessel with an offset tube, but can't find out what they were used for. If anyone could tell me what it is would be realy helpfull
  11. I used the mig to weld my 4140 dies to the mild steel with that genral purpus argon cor mix, seems to be holding out so far, if they brake a frind is going to weld them with his atomic hydrogen welder. I have some Massey hammer blocks I want to cut up to make some nice H13 dies but they are brand new and seems a waste
  12. I found when I welded the dies to the plate the plate warped a little bit I think this would make them not sit flat and maby help it crack, I set it up in the lathe and turnd the plate down till it was flat.
  13. Go to a scrap yard, they have piles of electric motors if you want a cheap one,
  14. Thank you, its about 30 pounds, it was inspired by a hammer called a Star and another one called a Perfect, I saw your hammer, that looks very nice, the belt drive works better than mine. and I like the way you have dovetailes for the dies.
  15. for some reson the belt shrinks when the weather is damp, once the belt warms up it works well, I had to turn the belt tensioner pulley around. oh and I made a phase converter to run it on 3 phase, they have heeps of 3 phase motors as the scrap and 99.9% of the time they work.
  16. With this set up you could use a higher speed motor and it would be geared down through the pulley system and have more torque
  17. I like that Y strap system, havent seen one like that before, be nice not to have the strap round the back of your neck like my apron.
  18. It sounds like a cotton belt, I just had one made for my hammer
  19. I do quit alot of bronze casting, I find it takes 30 mins to melt 8 KGS of bronze in my small furnace and nealy 1 hour with 40 KGS in the big furnace both running on LPG naturally aspirated burners, i tryed melting copper but it didn't work, not hot enough. If you found a better blower you might have more luck.
  20. http://www.trademe.co.nz/business-farming-industry/industrial/manufacturing-metalwork/other/auction-567799038.htm
  21. A frind of mine has one he uses every day, it seems to be a very good hammer, I have used it a few times, there is another one close to me for sale
  22. The bronze packer had been stolen out of the guide box I was told, Its too late to save it now,
  23. Would that be a 1 KW? Sadley I saw a huge massey at the scrap the other day.
  24. My wife dosn't have an anvil but she has a workshop, its verry cleen and tidy
  25. It works, clutch system needs ajusting, only problem I have that motor running on single phase and it is hard to get spinning and when it slows down it will stop and I have to keep kicking it with the capacitor.
