  1. Water was tested and its fine, Was someone saying Bronze springs are bad?
  2. Friend had a forge the same, it had round leather bellows that went directly underneath.
  3. I had a similar problem, the work I was doing and my shed were totally illegal as it was heavy industrial and the shed size, luckily the government changed the place I live in from residential to rural and then changed the rules on sheds that you didn't need a bulding permit, I am sure if its just a hobby there would be not much they could do?
  4. I have a cople of Buffalo blowers, a Canadian one and a USA one that needs to be un sized and its different to the Canadian one to, did you find a diagram?
  5. I think my phase converter is not enough to make the motor start, hammer has a prewar 3hp 3 phase motor, its 2 kms to the closest 3 phase line, I am going to try and up the phase converters motor
  6. I got a huge amount of lignite coal for basically nothing and am going to try it in the forge, we have the finest bituminous coal in the world here in nz but its not available
  7. I gas welded it, cut a filler rod from the side of a sheet, it is harder to weld than mild steel and if you work the sheet the weld can crack.
  8. I have some 2.5mm Corten sheet and i was wondering can I gas weld it? I could cut some strip off and use that as filler rod ?
  9. I might mount a steel bar inbtween the rafters to put the chain block on, I am also going to get someone to help, got a few days work at a big blacksmiths shop in town so wile I am there I will forge the new togel links.
  10. Had an accident fitting the motor mount and cut through one of the belts and gave my self a black eye with the chainblock. To fit new belts I now have to remove everything and lift the crankshaft.
  11. It has cast iron insert bearings and a 2.5" shaft. I am going to get the shaft remade and fitted and someone from the shop will need to come to my place with a box hone to do the bearings. I might of lured a tool maker to my place to give it a check over some time soon and he can tell me what needs to be done. I believe if its set up right it will make my life more easy. Got new springs made and welded up and re drilled the holes for the pivot pins. I remade that spring retainer rod but cut it too short for the lock nuts so I had to re do that.
  12. Its all going together now but having trouble shimming the bearings, has tight and loose spots, i found a chart witch recommended about 6 thou for the clearance but no way i can get that with out it nipping up
  13. I do worry about theft, a guy i know had anvils stolen but he did leave them out side where they could drive upto them, Would do better to steal my TV and Playstation than anything elce
  14. Setting up the Buffalo forge, a flathead v8 flywheel makes a good bottom. Submitted a photo of my old shop to a local magazine and won a years subscription witch was nice
  15. Started pulling down the old shop, gave the forge to a guy who was getting some tools together, put my home made power hammer on a auction site and it sold for a very very good price, probably because of that show forged in fire witch has made every man and his dog a knife maker.
  16. Working on gravel or crushed concrete is horrible, just have dirt, its way better
  17. Its a little frightening to stand infront of but should suck the fumes out of the shop well
  18. I ended up putting the 2 old windows from the old shop in. not sure how well the smoke hood will work with the bends in the chimney? Got this 24" extractor fan witch will probably cause the chimney to suck air.
  19. Just need a door and some more tin to finish the other half of the wall, I have stained the whole inside so it looks old, Started demolition of the old shop, put my home made power hammer on an auction site and it sold for alot of money, going to do the same with my old forge as I got a proper forge from 1877.
  20. Got the hammer frame and anvil in, i can proceed with the rest of the framing
  21. Dug a hole about 3 feet deep for the footing, because of the lockdown reinforcing steel is not available as with cement but made a steel cage from scrap and got some builders mix and cement delivered as most places are shut.
  22. I am not get political i just think its terrible and i feel real bad, Keep safe
  23. I started making the bolt system for my hammer it has x4 7/8 thredded rods that drop down 400mm of box secion with nuts welded on the bottom, i will make deep caps for the bottoms of the nuts, all this will be welded to the reinforcing steel so the top of the box will be flush with the slab. My hammer cant realy use T bolts because it wasn't cast to use them. Frend just tore out a 7KW Nazel that used this system for 50 years no problems.
