  1. Yes sir, 309L stainless filler is what I have. I believe I will pick up some Nickel 99 tomorrow--that sounds like a good idea. What does a "light" preheat mean to fill in hammer dings? I don't give up easily, as it's not about the $, it's about me learning to to do something beneficial and putting an anvil back into service!! Thanks for understanding that...(:
  2. That's true--I have 6 other PW's ranging from 100-191 lbs. I still want to try and fix this one, though. I'll see how low he will go!!
  3. Hmmmm. I thought I was getting a good deal at $100!! I'll have to counter...
  4. SoCal Dave, when I hard face my fumigation knives with missile rod, I can grind off the welds fairly easily after about 30 hours in the ground, 13 inches deep. I don't know why, but if I have to grind a fresh weld it's tough. A work-worn weld will grind easier. But like I said, I'm a farmer not a metallurgist (:
  5. Ok--here is the pic. Let me know what the best option is here.
  6. Stuart, that was more than I could digest in one sitting(: I do have access to one of those turbines--we used them on our multi-hole outhouses at the nursery. I will lose the reducer, and straight-pipe it with a turbine at the top for starters. It all makes sense--and I will let you know how it works. Thank you muchly for the info!!!! Wow...
  7. I agree with everyone-- that is a sweet anvil. And great pride in a job well done!!! Sometimes hard work is it's greatest reward...
  8. Stuart, it came with a 12" pipe that's reduced to 8" at approx 8 foot length. How will that work? In my current barn I'd need another 8' of 8" pipe to clear the roofline by 2 feet, at least where i'd like the forge to be. Do you recommend cables from the roof, or welding a stand right off the table for the hood?
  9. Thanks samcro. It's way more than I'll ever need. The lady selling everything just wanted it out of the barn. I missed a 100 lb Hay Budden and a 200 lb Vulcan for $75 each, and a Miller 250X mig welder for $250!! The cool thing is now when I have Cub Scout groups over for demos, I can get a few more kids in on the second pot!!(:
  10. Glenn, how high should that hood be off the table when I get to hang it?
  11. Yes sir! It came with a 130 lb Mousehole anvil and a 4inch post vice--for $300.
  12. That's all great info!! Contacted the guy to send over a pic of the damage. I do have mig, tig, or stick available. I do hard facing on fumigation knives, and yes, I dread the thought of grinding it! I don't want anything ultimately hard--just a good usable anvil.
  13. You never know where you'll bump into smithing equipment. I found this forge and hood at an estate sale--no one knew what it was!!!
  14. I have a chance to pick up a 130 lb PW anvil for cheap, and would like to turn it into a restoration project that I would give away to a budding smith. I read a lot of stick welding anvils here, and even hard facing mig wire, etc. I am not a professional welder, but we do a lot of mig and tig in the shop. Is there any advantage or disadvantage to tig welding an anvil? Is preheating still required when I can use the foot pedal to ease into the weld? I have missle rod and nyrod filler in the shop--what would be a better filler? So many questions!
  15. The top one is my newest anvil--a 118 lb HB. I wish I could read the sn, but the years have worn it away.
  16. I am a blacksmith rookie, and love all the opinions on this site. I see a lot of discussion on vise and anvil stands--3 legged vs. 4 legged, etc. so I wanted to share what works for me. The base of this stand is a Yetter coulter, bought at scrap price from a farmer down the road. These start at 42", and when they wear down to 36ish they are replaced. The beauty of this base is its heavy, it's slightly cupped so no matter where I move it in my shop it's stable, and the edges are beveled so I don't trip. If I'm working to the side of the vise I can also stand on it. Hope this helps at least one person!!
  17. Has anyone made an insert to slide into their wood stove so it could be used as a forge? In the winter I normally abandon my solid fuel forges and move my propane forge into the shop where the wood stove is. If I could slide an insert into the stove, would that kill two birds with one stone?
  18. My PW anvils all have different markings on the front feet. One has a 77, one has a 3, and the other has a double star. What do they mean?
  19. Yes sir, I bought them. The guy even threw in a 120 lb Vulcan Arms Sheffield that had 1/8" ground off of the face. All in all, I'm happy with them. Now I need to teach a few classes to the local kids with all that extra equipment...(:
  20. No question here, just wanted to tell the new guys never give up on the anvil search. After a year of working the RR track anvil, I stumbled on these 3 PW's---a 191, a 112, and a 100, all for a hair under 8 bills for all 3. I thought a good anvil was out of reach. It took a thousand questions, but only one asked at the right time. Keep after it!!!!!
  21. I believe I sent his wife my dues a cpl weeks ago!!
  22. Being from MI, I'd love to buy a Mankel anvil. Other than watching Craigslist, does anyone know a good place to pick one up?
