  1. I hear that! I bought 20 lbs (minus a couple rods) on eBay for about 2/3 list. Still... Thank goodness it's a labor of love!

  3. Pulsepush--I am in the process of contacting a few people. When I have 3 anvils lined up, we're rolling. All the rod and wire is in hand as of today.
  4. I want a few opinions on this. I read a lot of different postings on anvil restoration, so after talking to another IFI member have decided to do a side by side restoration on 4 tool steel/wrought anvils and compare cost, appearance, rebound, ease of application, hardness, etc. I have done one with a tig and 308SS, and have ordered the goods to restore one with Robb Gunther's method, one with Messler MG710, and one with ERS70 under Stoody 965g .045 mig. Would this be helpful to anyone? That said, is there anyone in SW Michigan that has an anvil in need of repair that I could buy for this trial? I respect all the info here, and want to do what I can to help advance more info. Shoot me an IM if you can help! Like I said, I'll pay fair market price. Lets do this together!
  5. Ok. I bit the bullet and ordered 10 lbs each of Stoody 2110, 1105, and Messler MG710. The next two broken anvils I find will get the two different treatments and I will post the results (from my point of view, anyway).
  6. If I had to weld up some torch cuts on a cast steel anvil, what rod would be the best to use?
  7. Agreed. Take misslerod, for example. It lays so easily, is harder than beet newt, but doesn't grind for diddly.
  8. I enjoy all this info. I asked about the McKay 600 because I have 75# on hand, and have seen rocks bounce off it on our digger elevators with no marring. It's also fairly grindable. Being a Dutchman, I like to use what I have on hand---but only if the results are satisfactory. Like David mentioned, I used SS on my last repair with the tig, and while the end result is a good usable tool, it's ugly. Maybe I'm missing what's really important(: Now that my brain is spinning--what would you weld cast steel with?
  9. Pulsepush--I'm looking for my next fixer, and would love to try 7018 with a cap of McKay Hardalloy 600. Do you have any experience with it? I use it around the farm and it seems to have good impact resistance.
  10. Btw--I don't know if anyone else has experienced this, but the guys at my local welding supply store always ask what you're welding. When I told them an anvil, all I saw was open mouths, and all I heard was crickets...
  11. Thanks, guys! Not quite done yet, but yes, I didn't realize how much welding it takes to fix one!! I'm already looking for another broken one so I can stick weld it and compare the processes. Appreciate the tips on "aging" it.
  12. I understand that. I hate to admit it, but I'm anal enough to think that an old anvil should look like an old anvil. All that shiny new hard facing makes me shudder--- even if it brings one back!
  13. Yes, if I had a good recipie to restore the old rusty patina on the sides of the anvil, it would be complete. (: And thanks! For my first rebuild, I learned a lot. I have a lot more respect for people that tackle these more often. (:
  14. Well, I picked her up this morning, and stayed in the shop a couple hours after work. This is what she looks like now. In Saturday I'll take a deep breath, preheat, and have at it. You gotta start somewhere!
  15. Yessir, everything subject to change(:
  16. Here are the measurements. The hood is 78x40 at the bottom, 24x22 at the top. The base of the hood is 56 off the floor, and 23 off the table. The pipe will be a 12 incher, and will go up 3 feet and over 3 feet to the wall. So, what cfm blower would I need?
  17. Vaughn, I will go out tomorrow after church and snap a few, and give some measurements. Can't wait to get 'er going (:
  18. Vaughn, this will be a 12" pipe. The guy didn't want one too large as to suck the heat out too quickly. He's not trying to sell me more equipment, he's my neighbor and is trading all this for me taking care of his landscape.(:
  19. Glenn, I had a heating contractor here today, and because of the steep pitch of my barn roof he wants to come up 3 feet from the hood and over 3 feet to vent on a side wall. He was also talking about installing a draft inducing blower in the pipe. How many cfm do I need? Hopefully there is enough info here to answer.
  20. Sounds like I have a lot to learn. Working in small, open pan forges have not leant me to learn the art and science of proper airflow. Challenges are great!! And also, I gave away one of my smaller forges today and will be looking to give the other one away this week. When we are blessed, we need to bless others!!
