  1. Have him send you pics of the face from a top view and a even side view to asses to sway and other damage. You will have to access the costs to fix that face properly with hard facing rods, even if you have a arc welder and are doing it yourself. My father is a Contractor in the GTA and a welder charges as a absolute minimum $60/hr. If you are planning on having someone else weld it count that in. The anvil itself is tool steel on wrought iron, and the face can still be loose around the area where the large piece came off.
  2. I have found this to be a fairly accurate way of measuring the weights of Peter Wrights +/- 15lbs. Most people give dimensions of anvils so this might be useful. All units in inches. L=Total length H=Total Height W=Weight W=(LxH)-100
  3. What type of anvil did he own?
  4. If you are seriously considering buying an anvil from the site, send them a email and ask about specs. I do not think they will refuse the give them.
  5. I was looking around at new anvils at OldWorldAnvils.com. They claim they will not be undersold but I found the exact same anvils, in greater variety of weights for several hundred dollars cheaper per anvil. Some anvils are even $4/LBS. The website is KowalPerun.com They also sell the 'Perun anvils' which AnvilFire did a review on. It might not be economical for someone to ship one here to NA of might be good for anyone in Europe. I thought anyone looking into buying a new anvil might find this helpful. http://kowalperun.com
  6. Pardon my ignorance but how do you secure you're tools heads to handles if not with wedges? I am not trying to be smart my question is sincere.
  7. Sorry, i thought you were referencing the original video.
  8. I do not think so. These videos were filmed in the late 30's to early 60's. Jesse does not seem to be over 45 years old.
  9. Watch the full video, it shows them fitting the tire to the wheel.
  10. I though I would share this video i found. The beginning is brick making, a little later is the wagon tire making, and fitting. Enjoy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vGLAjp96ji8
  11. I have a 100lb Peter Wright with par of the top plate missing. I am going to build it back up using 7018 rod. My question is regarding the preheat. I have read that it should be preheated to 400 f but from other sources I have also read not too go so hot. Will preheating it cause it to go soft and is 400 f the right temp? Also I was thinking of doing the last layer with hardfacing rod. Is this is necessary step or is the 7018 enough? Thank you
  12. I have a similar anvil, cast iron and steel top. You cannot see it in the pics but it is very visible that the two are joined. This one is 50lb
  13. Buy it at market price, get your use out of it and even if you decide to sell it after you find something better you will not take a loss.
  14. Nice looking anvil, It will be interesting to se how it come out. This article describes the Russian HF anvils, the faces were said to be soft. 35-40RC estimated. http://www.anvilfire.com/21centbs/products/ru_anvil/index.php
  15. I would like to know if it does at all dent. I have a smaller 50lb anvil and a much larger one, the small one does not dent and the large one dents fairly easily in incomparason.
  16. Nice to hear of your score. I hear the larger anvils are a little softer, does this one dent easily is hit will the cross pein?
  17. I have one very Similar, about 1.5lbs. It says Brooksville or Brocksville on it. There is more on it but I do not remember right now.
  18. I finally had a chance to try this out yesterday and I am really impressed. I railroad spike started to melt within only a minute or two, and when i was finishing the firebrick was even glowing red. The smoke was not as bad as I read either. It only smoked when starting up and after that is was going very well.
  19. A will take a guess and say popcorn from a mig welder. Very nice btw.
  20. Thak Ironworks sells blacksmith coal. He is outside Guelph. I am not sure on the prices but I have read $30 for a 70lb bag. Also you can have it brought to your local home hardware but that costs much more. Google 'Thak' for more info.
  21. Remember 2x8's are not really 2'' by 8''. I do not remember the exact measurements but grab a 2x10 instead and yo should be fine.
  22. Canadian Tire carries Royal Oak, also my local No Frills as some bags left over from summer $10 for a 10lb bag. The price is about $14 for 16/lbs for the royal oak. Where in Canada are you?
  23. I Have a deal in the works for some coal. A man is offering me 60kg (130lbs) of coal for $20. The problem is I do not know what kind of coal this is. How can I tell good blacksmith coal from bad coal? He says he got it from his neighbors garage, the neighbor died a few years ago. I am getting it on Friday. I live in Toronto, Ontario.
