  1. I just picked up several 60 lb. bags of "sandbox play sand" from Ace Hardware, $4.99 each. I plan on using them as a place to normalize my pieces and anvil stand for my RR track for my daughter to use. Depending on what I end up with for my treadle, I'll use some in the anvil post and hammer head too.
  2. Depends on where you want to end up with your smithing skills. Any hammer is going to help improve you overall skills but if you're end goal is more "blacksmith/artist" then you'd be best served concentrating your skill gains in that arena. IMHO.
  3. Hi Sam, the improvements look good, I'll have to incorporate them into my hammer when I build it. Hopefully in the coming month. I thought I read in another, or possibly even this thread. That the hammer head weight wasn't as important as the anvil post weight. I think I remember a ratio of 15:1 anvil to hammer. How heavy is your anvil post?
  4. Maybe it was something on my work computer, I can see them fine at home! Maybe I should be working at work and not lounging around here............... Awesome looking Thor Hammer, Ty, keep up the great work!
  5. My definition is similar to rlarkin's; except it applies to computer users (known as "L.users") who refuse to use their brains when it comes to computer usage. I had someone who needed a laptop connected to a projector today, tell me; "I need something connected to something." ?????????????? HEL-LO! could you be more specific!
  6. the pictures do not show up on my browser.
  7. I just got the word this morning that my sister Dawna's house in Maine burnt down overnight. No one was injured but the house and possessions are a complete loss. Please pray for their situation. Thanks Larry
  8. the only 2 issue's she had was getting a light enough hammer that she could handle and then hitting where she was aiming hard enough to actually move the metal. I ended up giving her a light weight roofing hammer but she was too concerned with not hitting the anvil face to really put any effort into her swings. I'm going to put one of my RR tracks into a bucket of sand for her to hammer on, that way she doesn't have to worry about dinging it. I was real happy with what she was able to do though.
  9. My 13 year old daughter decided she wanted to try some smithing yesterday after church and her is what she made. I helped some with flattening and drawing but she scrolled the ends and made the hook ends and twisted. She seems to have enjoyed it and wants to try again sometime.
  10. What does a Hofi Anvil look like? Do you have any pictures of your anvil on the site or would you please post one?
  11. I also ordered a dvd on how to MIG weld. I've never welded anything before, not even forge welding.
  12. We just received our income tax refund and I've already spent part of mine at Northern Tools. Here is a list of most of what I've ordered. Mig welder, welding helmet, gloves, locking c-clamps hand held bandsaw, extra blades bench grinder with 2" belt sander attachment, extra belts with this equipment and the steel I can build my treadle hammer! Including shipping this is just over $600.
  13. Knives and short swords come to mind. Any thinnish tempered steel tool you might be lacking.
  14. I have their business address and phone numbers on the flyer, if you want them.
  15. I still have some of the flyers for "The Mark" treadle hammer. They were / are asking $1500 delivery included for the treadle. $850 for the "power pack" air assembly, or $2200 for both, delivery included. It looks like a good solid product but in comparison I like the style that seems to predominate here on IFI. The Big Foot seems to be of this style. For myself, it coming in a kit form, I would expect to pay less then a fully finished, pre-assembled product. Thanks for the recommendation Tophand, $650 is a bit more than I would prefer to spend, plus I'd have to have 220 brought into the shop. Welcome to IFI, go to the top of the page and click the User CP and show us were you are from. From your post, I'm assuming Oklahoma. :D
  16. Welcome CLW, first thing we need to help effectively; is to know were you are in the world. One of our members may be living next door to you! Go to the top of the webpage and click on User CP and fill in info. Next go here and read some of the basic of the site; Getting Started
  17. Valentin, have you found a way to give it an antique look and decided if or what you are going to charge for it?
  18. Mostly in steel dust on the front of my shirt! I used the grinder and my chop saw to cut the front of the face off at the base of the first groove and also to cut a piece off the peen, I haven't tried to weigh those pieces yet, maybe 1/2 lb total though.
  19. Ok, I got crazy with the angle grinder and have further modified my old 4 lb. hand sledge into a much more maneagable 2lb. hand hammer. Once again the modified hammer was more zoomed in the picture than the originals.
  20. "Newbiesmith" on the sword forum brought this to mind when he said he also is an IT guy in reply to my post. I for one am into smithing strictly as a hobby and am the entire computer department of the school district I work for. What do you do to put food on the table and a roof over your head?
