Anvil abuse,
NO O/A Had a 150lb Trenton neighbor had cut 13 places with the blue wrench. Luckly only cut thru 1/2 the top plate. 14.5 inches total. Welded up and ground and saved it. 88lb H-B hit with too big a hammer. Horn gone from 3/8 in from table. Studded and welded a 31/2 rb cut and shaped looks like new. Ken

Proper anvil height
My 2 cents Use what is comfortable for you and what you are working on. thicker I go lower fine work I go higher. Older you get (64) harder it gets to see. Extra fine stuff is at about elbow height. Alwin will be stopping bye soon. Ken

make an anvil
At my shop rate of $50.00 per hour an 80 hr anvil would be $4,000 plus mtl, rod and electric. In the last yr have found and bought a 100lb vulcan 150lb trenton 142lb H-B 88lb H-B 141lb mouse hole and a 60lb vulcan Lowest price $35 highest $250 Anvils are out there if you look. Time invested in my 35lb RR track with square hardy pritchel hole step and horn ( first anvil) would be about $2000. Time is money.

welding career question
Have been doing this for 30+yrs. school is great IF you find a good one. Have worked aero space and mil spec jobs where the forman did all the tests for you. Have worked aircraft jobs where the Shop provided certs. I have owened and operated a welding, CNC cutting, blacksmith shop for 6 yrs. No schooling. Try starting out welding thermoucouples inside .020 tubes. You can learn on your own. It aint easy. Have had cert testers tell me " I never did it I went to school" Sorry but I went to the school of hard knocks.

New Guy - New Anvil
Bear in mind this anvil is solid swedish steel. No wrought no cast no Welded on top plate. If mine I would probably fill in the voids. I have to ask myself if grandpaw had the means to keep his anvil looking like new (welder beltsander stoveblack) would he. And yes I have tweeked my tool steel hay budden.

water cooler for tig
quietest cooler is to hook up to a water line. No noise and no worries about over heating. Only works well if your welder has a solonoid to turn it on and off. No water in the shop now am using a bernard SS unit.

Well now I've done it
Hay Budden late model wrought bottom half all tool steel top half. I have a 142lb same type. will belt sand to mint if desired. Paid $250 and thought I got a deal. Enjoy. Ken
