My mother that never gets, at least not admit to being sick anyway, and she refuses to even get a check up at a doctors; has been sick for a month and seen the Dr 3x in the past week, plus another apt is set for Wednesday. She can not see in her left eye now, nor have much control of her left side in general. The major doses of antibiotics have had no effect other than the G.I. effects expected with such levels. She is in her late 70's so Dad is scared she is going, whether that is a fact remains to be seen. Xmas gathering this year has been canceled/postponed.

Ya know, after sorta knowing Jim all these years I fear to ask what he will quench this in, as in the past he has followed livestock around to collect "quenching liquids..". and for a buffing compound :o

my last one I riveted, I used Wrought Iron rivets I made from the bar I had folded to make the guard from... No press here, yet

By NOT tempering you have retained brittleness in the steel that can result in failure. Re-read about what tempering does to hardened steel to see its also relaxing the steel from the thermal shock of the hardening process.
-
Critical Temp also depends on the alloy we are using at the time, they are not all at the same temp for proper hardening.
-
If it really is nickel silver and steel rather than normal 201 pure nickel with steel, Then I would be careful of heat, or to even attempt a heat treat as the copper alloy may melt out of it.
-
actually I did, its at my web site, here is the direct link Making a Damascus Katana
and thank you for the kind words. -
technically, copper IS like most other metals. steel is a minority about quenching to get hard, Just a FYI
also you didn't state if solid state fusion welding or soldering to join the laminates, that does make a difference in how hot, or cold, it should be worked. Or what metals you have tried. -
Also I might add that most the time those of us that "break the rules" to expand frontiers, almost always start with a grasp of the standard procedures, before the experimentation.
Like the popular comment about designing a race car, without first learning how to drive... -
you posted about a knife and it was moved there with other knife topics and it is still labeled as relocated, the link is still here...

The results have been confirmed, Sean has an enlarged liver, mainly due to fatty deposits, combined with lactose intolerance explains his problems since last spring.
He has a new diet and is back in school, NO hepatitis thank God -
My 14 year old son has been having medical problems since last fall. This last round has had him home for over 2 weeks now, starting with severe lower abdominal pain, ending only when he passed out from the pain after 40 minutes of screaming.
I have and will contuinue to be involved with I Forge Iron, but lately my son has keept me too busy to be here very often. and now we are told the main trouble is his liver.
I love you all and have not forgotten this place, but have not a lot of free time for chat rooms lately. so other than minimal staff work here, I have not been around and thought you all deserved to know why, Nothing personal. -
I have, but building and fire codes, and their enforcement is local specific, so not a lot or room for on-line help. call your local office.

chuckster2.0 said:Gunter's super quench will harden mild steel.
but we cant harden what isnt there. read the sticky's about what hardening is and you will understand why.

The question did not state if they were interested in things like L-6 that forges fine, just watch temps because if its too low will shatter, ; stainless steels; or German Silver, an alloy of mainly Nickel and copper...
-
its covered a bit in the knife stickies, Main thing is to keep out air, as the nature of stainless is the same chrome oxides that stop rusting will also stop welding. Fluoride based flux helps, but its very toxic too, good luck

I got a chance to read some of them at JeremyK's hammer-in, Loved what little I was able to read. They appeared well worth the price, but I was sadly unable to read much with all the things going on then.

This does NOT hold up in US Court, if you want it safe, register it with copyright office of your federal Gov't. -
I have the book of 5 rings, but it was still a chunk of wood, while the oar made for a good weapon, it was not a sword, I would have assumed Thomas would have known the difference ;)

I have to disagree, No level of swordsman can transform a broom handle into a sword. Make it a weapon yes; a sword, no.
To quote a past teacher of mine, "one can't polish a xxxx, and expect to end up with anything other than a piece of dung" -
