  1. I must go allong with thomas here, thats a farriers anvil in my opinion. no that old either.. some clif carrols have a step in them to.
  2. thats fine work valentine, I really like the detailed extra clip at the end of the curl, original,!!
  3. what ever you do with those horse shoe's DON't punt them on a horse!!! but i gues you figured that out by yourself :-) I'f got loads of old horse shoe's lying around (as a studant farrier) but never had a good idea to make annything out of em, the hole's are a bit in the way for most stuff.
  4. the word presse papier comes to mind weld a big slap of carbon steel on it... it may serve some temporary use then
  5. a blacksmith must get drunk on st-eloi, athorwise he'l do bad work for a year
  6. I pitty the fool! who does not plan :-) i make scetches, calculations, and usually a rough 3d drawing.. but not for simple things, I just gowith guts on simple things
  7. grandfather was son of a blacksmid, for 5 generations, but died before he could teach me annything, went to get a masters in product design, a degree as a farrier, sculpturing clases, and now 'im triyn to teach myself the craft, building a new shop and big masonary forge at the moment, and have recently bought an 100 y old 350kg anvil for the new shop. My goal is to become a full time professional blacksmith/farrier within 5 years.
  8. forge blower tongs hammer anvil hot cut post vise wheel cutter welding post jar of borax drawing board stock power magnet drill press grinding wheel slack tub fire extinguisher first aid kit wax
  9. nice forge andrei!! are you gonna make doors for her? where are you located by the way?
  10. nice Idea frosty, but I don't thinks my welding is clean enough to inflate it :-/ , it would just be air blowing around and doing nothing more.. either way you would need some pretty tough air compressor for that!... or insert water, and a small explosive (thats how the rusians used to make metal body parts for militairy viehicle's), explosion forming! :-) sounds fun
  11. nice one! simple chep and eficient , if you ever have the chance, replace the hair draier with an old vacum cleaner, that did allot of improving for me!
  12. take the preybarrr, genttely take apart the car radio, reasemble it with modifications so that it rons on plasma (use the caar battery en the oxygen tank for this) make an anthenna out of the cloth hangers, put this on a post made out of the 2 by 4rs en the concrete blocks, now you have a super charges transmitting device, signal aliens with this, when they come , hold out one hand to signal peace, hid them on the head with the preybarr with the athor, steal theier spaceship, flash to the nearest commet, get some space metals, go to the hamer inn, and impres everyboddy by making a blade out of it that can cut things without touching them. Cheers,!
  13. don't have mutch tumble weeds over here, but one spot an ocasional plastic bag flying by, ... witch is pretty sad come to think of it.... good thing they outlawed throw away plastic bags since last month! but if you don't have a large structure outside your house, you could also put one on a flag post or in the form of a sculpture of some kind..?
  14. mmn defence geese.. should we forge litle blades to clip to their beaks then? interesting ... :-) you should disband the NRA and startup a NGA (national geese association) instead, mutch more effective... and you would actually have a more effective way of protecting yourself, than you would with guns.... seriously...
  15. HELLO YOUNG SMITH, I'm pretty new to this forum myself, but I have been playing with hot metals since I was about your age. You'l find allot of info here, red true all of it, if your native english speaking or ar got at it, your lucky, there are mutch more books on blacksmithing tan there are in anny athor language... get some of them, you can even read a few online here for free. My athor advise is find a teacher/school/aprentincenship, i don't know about your area, but around here there are still some good blacksmithing schools left, you'l have to make an efford but its worth it! Be ware of safety! but get paranoid about it, if you fear what your working with you'l never get things done, understand it, respect it and be causious about it, but do not fear it. Also an athor tip, learn some stuff aboud metals and metalurgic science, and educate yourself in design a bit, it will help you shape your idea's. Hope its helpfull, welcom aborde! greetz Johannes
  16. hey man if you went to the trouble of making something so nice... and she's going with an athor guy, well she's not worth of you! to xxxx with her! You made somthing verry beatifull, keep up the good work... maybe try forging a stem for it? or make a bouqa
  17. mmmmmmnnnnn.. chocolate swage block.......mnnnnn but i gues your wright, unless you have a glass roof.. or roof windows (veluxes).... or perhaps a periscope up your chimey.. ok thats just silly.. :-) ne seriously, the links you gave us LDW, are really nice, but most of thouse silouette's can't be made without lazer cutting.. and I don't know about the US, but around here thats expensive! So I'm going for a simpler design witch i can cut out of some thin plate just using a electric hand figure saw, with a metal blade in it... it works, but you need to adjust your design, and finiche it with some hot rasping. greetzz
  18. hey guys, I know that most of you are Americans, and so this will probably be shock to you, in Belgium we are not allowed guns! unless you're a licensed hunter or a licensed sport shooter (to witch there are pretty high demands). And what may even shock you more, I HATE guns, guns give cowards and weaklings power they can not handle, althow I know very well how to use them, and have practiced with some different types, my dad is a licensed hunter and sports shooter, but I still hate em, if every gun in the world would disappear that would be a great thing, they only cause more violence and allot of grief. Actually I'm against violence al together, but for that reason I have goatherd certain skills that if left with now athor options i can end with violence in a swift and clean as possible way. (i have trained in choy-lay-fut for several years) So for shop security, a good heavy blacksmithed lock, with a padlock in.. and if thats not enough, well guys we're blacksmids right, our shoulder pack a mean punch (ok maybe the guys who own a power hammer don't anymore :-p) and every one of us have a couple of fore hammers lying around... that should be enough to scare most thieves right!? And a good dog.. but my loyal companion died last year... she had severe and wide spread cancer, had to be put down to save here from suffering... my next dog again will be a German shepherd, such nice, smart and friendly dogs.
  19. ahh.. now i understand, I'l have to clean up my german a bit bit I'l give it a shot, do i have the permision to say that you refered me?
  20. Hofi, Thnx for the link , but I actually have the complete angele catalog, and the only blanket insolation in there, is cut to size of their own ovens, none on the role stuff, and seeing how I intent to build one myself, to my own needs (and because Its just lot cheaper), so I'm looking for an athor source. What i ofcourse have found in the angele cathalog, is a nice picture and short bio on U Sir Hoffi!, i'm thinking about ordering a heavy hammer to ;-). Badger, the sicaflex, does seem the right stuf, and the dimensions you discribed seem a good size to me (ok maybe just a bit long on the 7200mm), would you happen to know where I can get a pricing on it? thnx allot guys!!
  21. Thnx fore the rplie's guys, I'l go to the big blasworks in liege, and ask there, I'm also gonna try a search for keawool. briks I have enough, an I use them for my coal forge, but i want to make a gas forge as light as possible, so I can have it in my van and pull it out when i need it on a job as a farrier (i'm stuying to be one, It's a 2 year cours do get an official diploma, and I'm almost halfway!), and briks would be a bit heavy. For the body i'm gonna use an old propane tank (no worry's I'l fill it up with watter when I cut in it), so to keep the volume pretty low, all it needs to heat are horse shoe's. anny other idea's? Kind regards. PS dont shoot the dislectics!
  22. Hi, THis is more a question to my fellow europeans around here, Does annyone know under what names kaowool or durablankes or a simular products, are sold around here (i'm from belgium), I cant seem to find anny. regards Johannes
  23. I'v used two old tractor rims welded together, pretty lightweight, verry strong end verry stable. but a woodn stumb just looks better doesn't it ;-)
  24. I'm not sure, but I figure, that type of hammer is more convieniend when striking on an anvil placers that low to the ground, by shifting the point of gravity ouwards, and the contact face further from the central axile, it require's les bending one's back when hitting the typicaly grond placed japanese anvil (with the master smith seated, his hammer has a central, more usual placement). But, this is just a theory... please correct me if you disagree. kind regards! Johannes
