  1. Try crazy glue? or all the above
  2. I think you made the right decision , by making two. As for the slipping wooden handle using a full tang is fine as you can use a braided wire that goes through the hole in the handle to fasten the braid to . The outside of the handle the braid can round the handle at an angle or flush together ,copper or silver add a niece touch.
  3. Jeeez I just get back to the site after 2 yrs of no puter an I see your wings...........! Things just keep getting better an better round here.........Duck
  4. I'll take a dozen ov em! Dang nice work, just as I'd expect from yas. The mantle pieces are the Crownin parts. An no I'm not dead yet, just smells like it! AHHHHH too close to the mares butt agin! See ya ALL IN THE FUNNY PAPERS AGIN bYE
  5. Heres a pic of the other end. You are inspiring and having too much fun.
  6. I just aquired this Brooks Anvil from England and its marked 3/4 a cwt , so 75 lbs. It had been used to beat on punch on and a chicken roost. The edges are chiped off. So after a lot of grinding and welding with 7018 after it sat for a few hours I welded and grinded ed and again,,,,I usually do the last finishing passes with a 120 grit sanding disc. Then paint everything but the table. MY question is........... ya theres always aquestion after all this typing. Whats a fair price for it before I refinish it. I owe a friends widow for it?[
  7. Hi Hans the next thought that came to me was the condition of your 1/4 inch tube for propane, it might have some crude on the end of it; or try moving it in a little. Just a guess or two. Have fun!
  8. Dirt on the fan blades maybe? Asumming its induced air. Ever put your hand out the window of a moving car? The shape of your hand makes more resistance depending how you hold your hand. Its the same with a fan and its performance. Its the same as changing the pressure of the gas any change shows up in flame performance. Simmilar thing happens with venturi or attmospheric burners. The inside of the mixing tube fills with debris, dust bunnies, dandilion seeds or bugs. Bugs are attracted to the smell of propane and crawl into things and build nests of bug cotton. Oriface openings are like a penthouse to bugs and they can comepleatly block off the gas till...................KA_ BOOM!!!! And then you have to splain why you have no eyebrows, eyelashes, or beard and moustache. I learned this one cleaning pool heaters. The heater was 3 feet from the edge of the pool. Try splaining to the guys at the shop why your soaking wet and have no eyebrows. Once everyone gets off the floor from laughing they ask are you OK?
  9. Yes the 1 in coiled twice around will do the job, but coating using the ITC product designed exactly for this problem does the best job. All forges should have this kind of protection and keeping a jar of this handy in the shop makes sence. Putting piece after piece of metal in the forge is bound to create little scraches and tears ; BUT it also improves the Efficiency. It uses "LESS" propane and any savings you can get is worth it in the long run! Most guys have problems with sagging, No not that! your insulation sagging, its a real problem most men have to deal with. I have seen 1/8 pins welded to the inside chamber of forges and 1 inch squares of metal with a hole in the centre. The insulation is stuck to the pins and the little squares hold it in place. The downside is they burn off in time and have to be replaced. Have Fun
  10. How are the blades in the fan? They could get a covering of dirt on them which changed the amount of air introduced into the burner. Either change the setting on the blade valve to get more air or use a bottle brush to clean to clean your fan blades; asumming this is a squirrel cage fan.But cleaning the fan is where I would start. Then see if the performance changes. Solving problems like this is a process of elimination, till things are corrected. I learned this one on a 5 million btu boiler about the size of a large freezer filled with cement. It was dancing accross the floor of the room and shaking the building when it fired. I was a little inexperienced with Large boilers and called the boss out who said why do you think I sent you out here to clean the boiler! Experience is great isn't it? Try this and post again if it does not change. Have Fun
  11. Move your burner in past the insulation, it would not make any real change to the insulation other than shortening its life span. You could also make a sleeve for the burner to fit into that just clears the insulation and hold the burner in place. Pics would help as my answer is a guess to your question at best. have fun
  12. If you keep to the size and design of what you already have, the only thing that changes for the type of gas is the oriface that fits into the end of the burner.
  13. Most of the materials used to make a Burner are black pipe fittings and can be found at some local hardware stores or heating suppliers, furnace suppliers, plumbing (hotwater) places that deal with boilers. Black pipe is used in Canada for natural and propane gases and are approved for that, also black pipe is threaded and easy to fit together but must be used in conjuction with approved pipe dope. the dope is responsible for sealing the pipe from leaking.PIPE DOPE Not to be confused with putting in your pipe and smoking! (its too hard to light) And don't use the Dope working wiffya, he never works anyway? Good luck! hope this " dope" works for you and have fun!

    Burner size

As to the thickness of the pipe,3/4 black pipe is approximatly 1/8 inch thick, and the larger the fitting the thicker the wall is. The only change would be how hot the tube gets; the thicker it is the longer it would take to heat up! As long as you keep yer tail feathers away (Don't lean on it) or cover it with a can of panty waste. Have fun.
  15. You might want to look at black iron pipe fittings, a 3 or 4 inch reducer to 1/2 inch then add a 1/2 inch nipple thats 6 to 12 inches long. A welded strip across the 4 in end of the reducer with a suitable hole in the centre to hold whatever size oriface spud ( Brass)you choose. The gas under pressure goes through the oriface and out the half in tube. As it does this it sucks combustion air into the mixure and you have your venturi. Slight adjustments will be needed to get the flame and amount of heat required. The gas line going to the venturi must have a possitive shut off before the venturi. I used a 1`/2 in ball valve rated for gas, its quick to shut off. I got my orifaces from old gas furnaces. Check the rating plate on the furnace. If the furnace is an 80 thousand btu's , count the number of burners and divid that into the rating and thats how much your home made burner will produce. Adjust the oriface hole size accordingly by redrilling. Using thumb drill sizes. If you drill too big a hole, braze it over and redrill; keeping the same inside and out shape as you started with.
  16. Easy now fellas, the lp tank was upside down with the valve open for about 4 Months! For propane to ignite it must be in a contained space and displace the air to a ratio 80 % propane to air for the spark to ignite the propane. That is when you shut the valve OFF! Then cut the collar or handle off. Open the valve again and cut the valve body accross the threads. The valve is solid brass. NO sparks! No ignition. No springs just a liquid relief. This leaves a hole about a half an inch into the tank. This is where I inject the water with the pump. You have to move the bottle or tank to remove any air bubble. When water sprays out the top its full. But I diped the tank with a reed used like a ramrod to check the depth and measure the level of water. This is when its safe to cut the top off the tank. The zip cut is cooled by all the water spilling out once around the tank and .........BOb's your Uncle ! The odorent used in propane leaches its way into the steel so there will be a bad smell for awhile. Then I flipped it over and removed the bottom, leaving a big metal pipe with an inside tab or flange.I have held an unlimited gas fitters ticket for more than 30 years. I guess I'd better not tell ya how to fix a 4 in. nat. gas pipe that was ruptured in a fairly clean cut. I always wondered why you had to have a hardwood taper with a 6 to 3/8 taper. I've been told metal hammers don't spark if hitting wood but you never know?
  17. To start with I took an old 20 lb. lp tank and cut the handle top off with an angle grinder with a zip cut. Then I cut the Brass valve of off the top. (no sparks Yet) Then I filled it with water,a little difficult with the small opening. So I used a hand pump fire extingisher and a reed to see the water level. When full I used my grinder again to zip the top and bottom off, leaving 2 inches from the outside edge. Then hammered the edge in to the centre for a door flange. I'm planning on a single burner, top mounted to a welded flange so I can adjust the depth of the spud into the forge. The doors (both ends) will be a square frame with chains welded to the top edge. That way I can push stock through both openings and just heat the middle. I want to put a window in the side to see how long it takes for me to burn up my projects? Any suggestions for a window material? Mica, lexan, tempered glass, what? Thats it so far, stay tuned for next weeks cliff hanger! ...Duck
  18. Thats a passel of work Bob,you should post it on Armor Achive and make them all green with envey
  19. Phil Got one out in the barn rusting nicely.........the only thing I dig ground for is to bury it! ........Duck
  20. Drewed: Its real good to see another smiths work. The glass in the cross is really difficult for some folk. Mine included, but I think you let the cat out of the bag with the way you heated it! Every time I tried it the metal would cool faster than the glass; and Crack! But you have drilled holes at the ends of the splits, which also stops cold shunts. They might stop the metal from shrinking back. So with the way you headed and shrunk it it Works. Ureka! Or at least my guess. Well done. The plant hanger might be a little easyier to make if you make a round divet with a ball peen then drill your holes for mounting. Theres also a good oppertunity for making a C scroll to hold up the main spar. The bottle opener was exicuted perfectly, the half moon tab is great. Try experimenting with some of Hofi's twists for more handle ideas. Basket twists really spice up a plain piece of work, I did one where I carefully bent one of the spars open enough to slide in a marble then closed it up with a little isolated heat. Its funny how people can't figure how you did that? You are entering a very exciting time dicovering new techniques and surprising yourself as just how far you have come. Hope the fun never ends......Duck
  21. Like frosty said keep a coffee can around and fill it up with leaves. Then you always have a bunch to choose from when you need them.
