  1. I have one that I made from a car's heater blower, it worked good, you have to make a housing for it, atleast all the ones I have ever seen are a small squirrel cage type blower and when removed from the vehicle the squirrel cage is open. welder19
  2. I have a 35lb sledge hammer head that I don't swing anymore and am contemplating using it as an anvil on a treadle hammer, but I have yet to complete my plans for it so I may or may not use it for that, other wise it makes a dandy door stop. welder19
  3. It should be ok, acetylene reg. can be used on propane also. welder19
  4. Mine is clockwise to increase also, but I don't know as though it is a standard of any sort, they could vary between manufactuers I suppose but all the ones I have are clockwise. If it doesn't say on the knob and you don't have a gauge on it then which ever way feels like the knob is getting tighter is the direction that will be increasing your psi, but it is really best to have a gauge on the reg. so you know what your psi is set at. welder19
  5. If your going to use bolts be careful if they are zinc coated, which a lot of em are, don't breath the fumes while the zinc is burning off. welder19
  6. I have filled pipe w/sand for cold bending but have never done it for forging, don't know how it would work out but can tell you to make sure the sand is dry if your going to fill a pipe and heat it, if it is wet it will create a lot of steam/psi in the pipe and could be extremely dangerous. welder19
  7. Yup, it's really thin and basically just burns off, the older it is the thicker it will be and more toxic I beleive, which is why it was so much better than the newer stuff and like said, DON'T breathe it. welder19
  8. Check antique shops if you have any in your area, not always the cheapest places but they often have blacksmithing tools and equipment, ebay always has some but almost always way over priced unless you find a rusty one in need of a good cleaning or rebuild but then you still have the shipping to deal with. welder19
  9. If it were me I would run a new power line that would handle the demand and go with an elec. unit versus gas or diesel, if that is an option, for a couple reasons, 1- cost of fuel, 2- cost of the machine 3- cost of maint of an engine driven unit, 4- I hate listening to engines run all day long, but if you can't supply sufficient power then without question diesel versus gasoline but if you can get a propane/lpg powered unit then that would be my choice but I don't know if they have propane powered welders or not. welder19
  10. Not from the frame but the suspension and/or the tires will give you bounce so if your leaving the anvil on the trailer while working then you will want jacks on 4 corners. welder19
  11. Looks good! What rpm is the motor? welder19
  12. Sounds interesting, be sure to share some pix. welder19
  13. I thought it said 170kg, but it's 120 which is 265lbs welder19
  14. Is there only one size? or are there going to be more available? welder19
  15. Thanks Glenn and all who help keep this ship underway, your time and dedication is greatly appreciated and I know I speak for most of us when I say we would be lost without you and IFI. I'm on a few other forums and can say that IFI is the best, your dedication and commitment and hard work really shows. Thank You! welder19
  16. If you have never used a straight razor make sure you either get someone to show you or read up on it which I'm guesssing you may have already done that but I just have to throw the warning out there, I learned on a straight razor and still used it once in a while, they give a whole new meaning to "cut myself shaving", forget the little piece of tp stuck to your face. Once you master it though it is a really great shave. welder19
  17. Here is where I buy my crucibles from, they are the best prices you can find. Budget Graphite Crucibles: Legend Inc. Sparks, Nevada USA welder19
  18. Sounds like you got a pretty good deal, can't think of any thing right of hand for those discs but definitely good to have, something will without a doubt come along and you'll be able to use them. What is the dia. and thickness of them? welder19
  19. Welcome to the forum! That's a mighty nice offer to let people try out your power hammer, I'm a little far away but there are a lot of folks on here from down that way. welder19
  20. I have found 3" is pretty good, I wouldn't go any more than 3 myself but others may have other opinions, but with 3" the out side won't normally get too hot to touch but that will vary with the design of the forge also. welder19
  21. Looks good, if it were mine though I would add a "wing" on ea. side that could be fliped up to catch/hold long material. welder19
  22. Welcome to the forum! Have any pix of your burner and forge? would love to see it. welder19
  23. That is why I used RV anti-freeze, it is non toxic, it won't hurt any animals or humans for that matter if they drink it, it is the stuff used to protect water systems in boats and RV's. I'm sure there are some people out there that would be careless or dumb enough to use conventional anti-freeze but I'm not one of them.
  24. I used RV anitfreeze last year, I have a 1/2 wooden wine barrel for my slack tub and if I recall I used 3 gal of antifreeze in it and the worse it got was slushy when it was really cold, single digits f, which we are supposed to get this week but it is currently empty. A guy I know uses a small trolling motor hooked to a car battery and a small bertty charger hooked up to keep the battery from going dead. The motor keeps the water moving so it can't freeze. A freind of mine who has horses uses a fish tank (aquarium) bubbler in his troth, does the same thing as the trolling motor, keeps the water moving enough that it doesnt freeze, but it is a lot simpler than the trolling motor plus the bubblers are just plug in, 120vac and use a lot less electric then heating elements do. I am using a piece of 1/4" copper tubing bent into a circle and a bunch of small holes drilled into it and will hook it to my air comp. to make the bubbles, I have an 80 gal air comp. so it isn't going to run that much, I wouldn't want to do it if I only had a small compressor, it would run too much. welder19
  25. I'm not sure of the Au to US $ but $200 is way too cheap for that anvil, even if it is only in fair cond. If you want to see anvils sell for top dollar try watching some on ebay, you would think some of them were made of gold, but they are mostly collectors buying them, I can't imagine any blacksmith paying those prices, not this one anyway. However, I don't know what kind of money people in Au would pay for it, but if it's really mint cond. then it wouldn't surprise me if someone in another country would but it and pay to have it shipped, I have seen anvils on ebay sell for as much as $8 a lb. Well which ever way you decide to go with I wish you good luck, maybe you might just want to keep it and use it yourself, it is an excellant hobby. welder19
