  1. The cages are less than lovely but they provide the best protection. Finnr
  2. Vulcan hasn't been made for many years. The maker is long gone. Good idea though for a newer anvil. Finnr
  3. Flap dicks are very aggressive. But they leave a far smoother finish that a hard rock. Finnr
  4. Box bellows ducky? I haven't built one but have used several made by friends and yes they work well and can be built very cheaply. Finnr
  5. If I am unable to get ANYTHING else I buy HF flap disks I don't expect long life or even super performance , But they serve until I can get to my welding supply and get the good ones. No way I know of to get both cheap and quality, that is a basic oxymoron. Finnr
  6. The best looking is what ever sells. Finnr
  7. An eight pound hammer with a striker is just too much for a small (75# ) anvil to handle. I am afraid it's toast now. Finnr

    What about Youse? Finnr
  9. Gotta agree with you on golf Mike. I never did understand "pasture pool" myself. Finnr
  10. Super design. Ilike that all the most likely to come flying at you bits are covered but still visible. Finnr
  11. Mike. I think you are right. Sure looks to me like a bead on the off side of that anvil. Finnr
  12. RR rail is just one thing that can serve as an anvil. To get going snag any large heavy hunk of metal and make do until you find The perfect anvil ( there really ain't one what is perfect for me isn't likely to be perfect for you ) As Frosty said , don't waste valuable learning time in search of a rainbow. 13. Good advise Mike. By the way that is one of my favorite quotes! ( your signature line ) Finnr
  14. Your are doing a real nice job there Mark. Finnr
  15. Greetings Neighbor; Hello and welcome to IFI from Western Wisconsin Finnr
  16. Sweet! That's just cuter than a bug's ear as my Gran used to say Finnr
  17. Anhydros Borax is in fact borax that has been melted and reground to powder. From my experience making it is a pain. Buying it costs more than 20 Mule. I use 20 Mule, and add around 10% boric acid as my regular flux. Finnr
  18. Quench! You hit the nail on the head dead center! Finnr
  19. Hello from farther North in Wisconsin. Black River Falls area. Pleased to have you on board. Finnr
  20. If you want directions on hardening and tempering a RR anvil Alexander Weyger's book The Complete Modern Blacksmith covers it very well. The one I had I just arc welded a chunk of Semi leaf spring on the top and the young man i gave it to a couple years back is still making use of it. Finnr
  21. Free isn't always cheap. If you haul home something that can make you sick or kill you the price of free was WAY too high. Finnr
  22. That's down right spiffy Steve!! Finnr
  23. Either fiberglass of a metal patch will do you well. It ain't rocket science. Canedy Otto blowers are fairly common around here . Picking up one that has trashed gears would give you a new housing. Finnr
