Hi all I am hoping some of the great minds here can help me with this. I have a 35 Ton air assist press that i have been using for the past three years. It's been fine for the occasional forging I did but I am forging a lot more and this thing is really slow: So now I have been given this stuff that I am told will work to build one and what I know about hydraulics is scary. My hammer is working like a dream but is destroying the foundations and annoying the neighbours so is standing mute. This is what was given to me: Pump Controll? 3 2 Cylinders and a tank It all comes of a hyster (forklift) and is working. Just needs a good service, new seals and piping. What I need to know is will this work? The motor on my hammer is a 3.5 HP single phase 1700 rpm and I can take that and use it if needed. Any advice, info and assistance would be appreciated. I tried to buy Mr Batson's book but nothing available that I can get using paypal. Thanks Tim

Thanks Frosty I am going to do a collage of black and white photo's in photoshop and have it printed onto canvas made to fit the frame.

Well obviously not that well liked. Now finished, must just put the backing with the photos in.

That's like taking every painter in the world and every musician in the world and telling them they are not allowed to practice there chosen art form because I garantee you that somone else has done it before. If an artist paints a particular scene, is that scene now restricted to all other artists? If somone forges a harp are all harps copies of his work. Every artist has a particular style of doing things so even if you try to copy the exact same piece it will still be uniqely yours. Anyone who says otherwise in my book is just afraid of competition. Plagiarism is the "wrongful appropriation" and "stealing and publication" of another author's "language, thoughts, ideas, or expressions" and the representation of them as one's own original work and everyone is guilty of it in one form or another. But plagiarism in it's correct definition applies to litireture and not always to art so if it bothers you then give credit where credit is due if you use anothers work as a foundation for a piece you are making.

That is really beautiful. Nice work.

It's been a long time since I have been able to forge anything except knives. So decided to take a break and do something creative. This is going to be a photo frame for a collage my wife wants to do for our 19 mth old daughter. Forged out the left portion this afternoon. Will do the other 3 parts tomorrow. To err once is humane, twice is stupid and third is usually when you lose something. 3 Times I have had to rush off to the optometrist to have a piece of steel removed from my eye. First 2 no glasses, third time with "safety" glasses. Make sure they wrap around. I've been very lucky when other have not. Not worth the risk.

Sorry guys for the late response and thanks for all the advice. Little one had chicken pox so time has been scarce. Don't know what it is about wives that think that dads that work for from home are ALWAYS available to babysit :D Think I am going to stick with what I have for now and just use some refractory bricks to contain the fire. Can always put a fire pot in later if I need to. Cheers Tim

Thanks Aden Yep, same knife. Have just been informed that it is a "PORTABLE U. S. CALVARY FORGE" WW 1 era. Today has been a really good day!

Got this today It was a trade for this I wasn't expecting the box only the blower. This blower is at least 3 times bigger than the small farriers forge blower I had and I have been looking for one for over 5 yrs now so am very pleased to say the least!! But I am curious about the whole set up. It's all made as if it belongs together. Everything is riveted on the box and the air pipe has flanges that the pipe can be easily dismantled - just pulls out - flanges also riveted same as the box. Blower has a bracket the just unscrews and it all fits in the box. Any one seen one of these before? And just an added bonus my local scrap dealer (who gets free knives) gave me this 120 kgs - just needs a bit of work on the face and rebound is very good. Cheers Tim

Exactly my thoughts. It's been a while since I have been absorbed by a thread, learnt a few things too.

Was running it slow as it was a first test run. Runs at about 250 BPM at full speed and I miscalculated the ram weight - works out 50#'s.
