  1. I don;t mean to argue with a very valid point but the nerd in me is coming out... if an object is moving straight up and then returns straight down the energy it will have is equal to the objects mass x its terminal velocity. thus little danger. HOWEVER if the object has an arc like trijectory (to mean it goes a little sideways)then there will be little or no loss of speed or energy. there have been many studies and even a mythbusters episode dedicated to this. for example if a bullet is fired upwards and comes down on a similar path then all of the initial energy will be ovwercome by gravity and then the new energy will be a combination of its mass and terminal velicity, it will hurt someone but more than likely no longer be deadly. a bullet shot at say a 45 degree angle will remain deadly until it is stopped by something. in much the same way as schrapnel from the proposed firearm, the majority of the schrapnel that would make it out of a dry pond scenerio would be in a arcing trijetory and therfore VERY deadly. only the small ammount of material that went straight up would be less than lethal. firearms manufacture can be very dangerous and possibly even deadly, this is why the BATF has a licensing process for gun makers
  2. you think so? that would be great! more gas...lol well if it is safe to do then one of these days I might just do that. if i can ever think of a reason to actually do it.
  3. I have a question that relates to this one guys. I have a 100# and a grill tank. I'm wondering if it would be a good idea to manifold these together. i don't really see a point to hook them together, but I got to thinking if it would be safe to do it, with the larger tank holding more gas than the grill tank, i would guess it would have a higher pressure and if I'm right then not sure if it is safe to do so. what do you guys think?
  4. My shop is too small to need extension cords. I have 2 outlets in my shop and my drills cord reaches the center of my shop from either outlet. I have 3 extension cords in my shot I keep coiled up hanging on a board if i need power outside of my shop.

    metal lathe

I just got my lathe, I have a combo unit (lathe/mill/drill press) I must admit I use the mill more than the lathe, but I do find it invaluable. I got my for a song. a lady who lives a couple of hours from me told me her dad died a while back and thing piece of machinery was in her way and just wanted rid of it so if I came and got it she only wanted $200. my partner in crime, otherwise known as my cousin's husband, is alway working on one project or another with me, wants to use my new lathe to make a gun barrel. I might just let him...lol and after testing if he is still around I wanna try to shoot it....lol if you have a chance to get a lathe or any piece of machine shop equipment, don't take the guys arm off when you get you reciept. tim
  6. I would find a gunsmithing forum and check wiht them before continueing with this project. Although I am very interested in this idea, even if the barrel is not forged, Please post pics when and if you get done. good luck and be safe
  7. nice vise....on a side note love the figure heads on you headache rack. heck love the whole design
  8. Exactly....what he said... now dumb it down a little for those who are not as smart as me...lol(ok, ok for me I'm an idiot)
  9. friction welding is an awsome this to watch.
  10. I didnt get insulted by the kid asking for swords AND i was very polite when i told him no. something to the effect of come back in a few years and we will see if I am capable of it by then. we he and i took one of my large spike lik enails and made him a knife out of if. a rough and crude knife that probably will never holod a good edge. but he got something and he got to learn just how "good" I am at blades at this point. we had a good laugh when it was finished. this thing really was pretty bad. I've gotten (i would say) much better since then. now to improve to a point where i can sell something
  11. I have already had several "kids" askif i could make then a sword. I can barely make knives much less swords
  12. I had a similar problem with some of my knives when I first started, It seemed to me I was hammering after it got to cold. when the leaf gets too cold for thype of material your using, apply more heat.
  13. back in the days of canvas tents they were waterproofed in one way, shrink the fabric. this tightens up the holes in the weave. I actually heard some people boiled the canvas and then let it airdry in order to waterproof them. I;m not too sure how truthful that is though.
  14. No thats refered to as a tuneup or a nose job. dental work is either a trip to the dentist or a hockey game, being in mexico i would say a cheaper trip to the dentist. lol
  15. sounds to me like by rustic this guy is lookig for the kinds and appearance of items that might have been found in the frontier towns from back in the "wild west day" of american history. things that can be sold as "authentic pioneer" items and would be right at home being placed on a shelve near funiture carved and build from small logs.
  16. winder is on the other side of the state form me. average temps in a georgia winter range from 50 to -5 with the ussualky winter cold front will get down to around 10
  17. a license would depend on the business address given. If the mailing address you are shipping from is inside an area(city limits or in certain counties) then yes you would need a license to be strictly legal. in my countywe don't need a license, but in city limits we do. any bussiness even mail order ones and ebay companies require a license. the up side is they can only fine you if they find you and with an ebay or online bisuness that becomes harder.
  18. sugar charcoal and baking soda...sounds like a messed up gunpowder mixture....becareful adding sugar to anything that will touch red hot metal, especially since sugar combined in equal amounts with potassium nitrate otherwise known as saltpetre is a military grade smoke mixture. I can attest from personal experience a large tablespoon of this mix will fill a small room with some until barely visible. I would be careful with the sugar and baking soda mix, especially adding anything else.
  19. wrong direction? how so...if it burn coal or charcoal without melting or over heating then all you need to do is tune it and it will get plenty hot enough. I actually had a campfire going at forge temps once...using the provided grill grates at the local DNR campsite...I got the grate(3/4-1inch round bar) glowing a nice shade of yellow....wife looked at me cross eyed over that one....but the point is...a fire can be tunes to get as hot as you need it...you say wrong direction , please explain what you mean by that
  20. well my B-day was the 5th, the wife started new meds on the 6th so she was totally compliant with what ever i wanted to do that day, and the kids were gone until 6 tonight...wo I had a fun weekend, and I got to ploay with not onoly the forges but my mill as well. that last one, I used the mill to make a handle for. it is ugly but it was a first attempt at a milled handle. once the epoxy dries and I get to sanded i'll post pics of it tomarrow sometime. the first knife I gave to my cousin, he wanted it as is. didn't want a grip on it...mumbled something about hidden knife inside a belt...i don't know exactly. and the rasp knife is still cooling in the ash bucket....I'll keep you posted on it...I'm kindda excited to see where it goes and if I can finish it without cracking it.
  21. you have several options hacksaw, sawzall with metal blade, angle grinder with cut off wheel, cold chisel and hammer, tin snips (if thin enough sheetmetal) get creative and be safe
  22. i agree with phil a brake drum forge is perfect for a beggining forge. In fact I still work from one when I use a solid fuel forge. I;ve been considering making a larger forge, but every time I think about disassembling the brake drum forge and making something bigger I think to myself I have my gasser for larger items and....i can only work a small section at a time so why bother building a bigger forge. if you need to see how a brake drum forge is built I reccommend youtube...search for purgatory iron works. this guy ussually works the renfest here in GA and we shop at the same store for our refractory. I got the bug from watching this smiths videos and went out and built a brake drum forge and I've been heating and beating ever since. remember always have fun and be safe.
  23. still working on my rasp knife, I finished drawing the tang, and now I am letting it sit in the ash bucket to anneal it. once it cools enough to handle I'll get me pictures. in the mean time I have another I'm working on. here it is. This one has some hammer marks I can't get out without making the blade too thin. but regardless of those few marks ..here you go (with a AA battery for size comparison) I'm workin gto fit a hidden tank handle to this third one.
  24. I used to install dish network locally and one of my customers used the pink foam board to insulate his floors. the foad boards used were appoximatly 2 inches think. I couldn't hear anything from inside th ehouse and my helper couldn't hear me screaming from right under him. how do i know i was right under him...he drilled a hole for the cable wire and his bit has just come through the floor about 5 inches from my head. so i screamed at him ...he never heard me even after he stopped drilling. foam board if thick enough does well as a soundproofing
  25. I have a second blade I started today. I started this from a hoof rasp the plan is to continue to draw the tang out so this knife will use only 1/2 of the over all file. I'm thinking I might put the mill to work on this one, and make some scales from aluminum for the handle, or maybe brass. I some plate of each. what do you guys think? once again, ignore the dates. I will post more pictures of this last one as it prgresses. unfortunatly I had to stop this one at this point because I am out of propane, and I used the last of my charcoal to get this far. I might go to the store and get more propane later today, or make/but more charcoal. tim
