  1. same here LDW< i envy his Journey as well... I found blacksmithing a little too late to pursue with abandon, too much for me to lose to gamble making a living at it for now... Here's to ya Man! and Good Luck at it!
  2. I got a question, How can you afford to buy a gun to forge with, and where would one get them? I would love to play around with that idea, (only on some that were junk to begin with) and as far as i am concerned there are a lot of guns out there that are works of art. think i'll take the 44 mag black hawk out the next day off and go plinkin this has got me wanting to go for some reason...
  3. I have a mouse hole with a similar affliction. I just made a stand that compensates for the poor guys Lean
  4. your right monster, thats a nice machine, would love a press in my little shop, course i'd have to learn how to use it... as far as trying to set him straight, some people just don't like being wrong. and if you try to help em correct the mistake, no matter how much tact and civility you have, they will still take offense... just like you said some people just can't be helped...;)
  5. thanks posting Kinda wondering what they are gonna use it for...
  6. I just happen to have about 5 lbs of 6011 rods, though there a little too big for the application... Just did some leak testing under 30 psi propane and only had 4 pin hole leaks, ( too small to see with out soapy water) , zapped the holes with what the 6013 rods i have left and rechecked. no leaks! the next set i build I am gonna try welding em with 6011 and see the difference. one question though, is the 6011 rods pretty sensitive moisture? these were kept in a drawer with a desiccant.... Just wondering if I am gonna have to bake em.<_<
  7. thanks for the tip, hadn't thought about brazing, i've got a oxy/ acetelene torch so that might be an option...
  8. Hey guys, I run an AC only 220 amp Hobart welder. Currently I am working on making some propane burners for some forges, I am using 3/32" 6013 rods for welding up the tube on the burner. I am getting good deposit, good penetration, but When i leak test for gas I always find a pin hole or two and I have to go back and touch up the holes. was wondering if there is a rod thats better suited to the task of making gas tight welds! Thanks for any suggestions!:P
  9. great idea Steve! , didn't think of those outdoor spring type outlet covers... gonna head over to Lowe's tomorrow anyway, so i'll just pick one up...
  10. thanks for the compliments! As far as the outlets go , hadn't thought of metal dust getting in there , I will defiinately take the advise and cover the outlets, my shop is 12 by 14 so not much room, can't really move the grinder so i'll probably tape up around the outlet as to keep the dust from going in to the one behind the grinder... Also Thanks for the critique on safety, some people get upset when you mention things like this, not me! the more eyes on safer ways of doing things the better i think!:D
  11. here is a link to a picture of a ford canada , is it what your talking about ? FORD CANADA very curious looking truck...
  12. I like the idea of a history page or area on here, lots of folks interested in the history of the craft, course that's just my 2 cents nice video btw
  13. for blanket www.ceramicfiberonline.com
  14. Thanks for letting me know, Just got on the horn with a real person about them sending me the wrong order and they seem to be easy to work with, there supposed to call me back and let me know about sending me out what i ordered. It should work out either way, just hope to have a couple forges done before our June meeting to sell!!!:)
  15. Hey guys , Anyone ever use 1 inch ceramic blanket on propane forges? I have always spent the little extra to use the 2inch and it has served me well. Just bought a box online and they sent me 1 inch, not sure if it is worth sending back or just to try 2 layers of the 1inch... My one issue is if it will collapse down inside the forge. ( I use freon tanks as the body) well let me know your opinion please and thanks!!!
  16. I was thinking it was the original to the anvil but wasn't sure, thanks for the INFO...
  17. Hey guys, I just bought this arm and hammer, anvil. it weights about 80 lbs or so, (haven't got a scale) and was wondering if you could tell me if this weld is factory or a repair, also the face is almost like new, was wondering if it had been replaced as well. this thing rings like a bell and the rebound is good for the size. just curious if you could tell me anything about it... Thanks!
  18. I believe it was Bill Creek, he did a good job and i liked that jig he came up with for making 3 sided bar stock... Ray and I got a lot further than I thought we would, since we didn't have time to practice the demo... this was basically a "what you remember from Brian's Hammer Class" demo and surprisingly I think alot of it came through alright... It's just a matter of making 10 or so to get the hammers to look nice LOL...
  19. We had a great meeting down in Charleston, at the Magnolia Gardens Plantation, I had a lot of fun helping Ray demo how to make a hammer and a fool out of one's self, thought i would post a picture of Me and Ray using a cupping tool and a drift that i made... special thanks to Ray for setting up and helping organize! we also had a good demo about forge welding and I learned a few things for sure. I have a bad memory with names and can't remember the gentleman who did that demo. maybe one of the members can post it for us...
  20. well, i know a guy in the guild down here near clemson that repaired the anvil i used , did a great job too!, post some pics and ill see if he is interested in helping you out, and get you his info! good luck with it! jody
  21. got any pictures of it? I would like to see what you did to it...:D
  22. Hey vaughn , glad to see someone post in the PSABGSC section of iforge! I am next to Clemson Univ. that's a bit of a drive from greenwood though but if you need help building a gas forge or burners for the forge I'll lend a hand( ive built 6 so far) also our next meeting is down by charleston at the magnolia gardens . for once i am off work and going there! good luck getting tools together for sure,
  23. Is your forge lined with clay or any other type of insulation? It would stand to reason that that may help reflect the heat back upward versus the pan radiating heat through the pot ? I have no experience with this type of forge but just my 2 cents. I am sure others will chime in with more wisdom on your problem. GOOD LUCK! B)
  24. this Is my first piece of pattern welded steel. 15n20 and 1080 with some nickel sheet for shine thrown in. I made a bar out of this stuff, and this was just a simple little thing i did to see the pattern.
  25. looks like Aaron's getting some great training, good to see you in picture for a change To LDW!
