  1. Nice job Tar...Does she sing as well as she looks...??
  2. I remember seein a kit for making a welder from an old aircraft generator in the burden supply warehhouse catalog as well as the generator CB
  3. I tend to agree with awmawson it looks like another take on a radius cutter for like he said a round bed lathe or to clamp onto a boring bar, a speciallly made round tool post, or even the tailstock barrel to acheive an internal or external radius where you need it there are as many applications as there are imaginations out there CB
  4. I love the K.I.S.S engineering on that dividing head. My old college instructor made one for a mini mill from modified plans in the home shop machinist mag, about twelve years back.. lots more detailed parts. Is this one good and steady like it looks ...?
  5. You might try looking at your local used book stores for old highschool and college course books for lathe and mill classes... Best thing in my humble opinion woul be taking a local community college basic machining class they usually run for two to four hours per week if evening classes are offered C.B.
  6. A good basic lathe can make it's own accessories as long as the operator's imagination is operational.... (Glenn's quote about smiths making the tools also applies to machinists) no insult intended here just a fact C.B.
  7. You lucky son I've been trying to find a freebie for months (to no avail sigh..) enjoy your now new toy ....oh and if you find another one you don't want feel free to pass it on to me it would be GREATELY appreciated Cliff the Norseman
  8. D W For myself half of the interest and challenge of this fine profession /hobby is making the forge and tools for yourself there are many web sites out there with plans on building and tips on tuning gas forges as well as building a good old coal/coke burning forge...... OH YEAH GEE WIZZ I FERGOT !!! This is one of them !!!!........(pun intended here of course !) The satisfaction of making something usefull out of stuff that to most is junk is a feeling hard to describe. Just ask all of us here what you need to know and answers will flow unto you rapidly from all directions....I gotta use one of our most respected senior members quote here as it fits perfectly... THE TOOLS DONT MAKE THE BLACKSMITH THE BLACKSMITH MAKES THE TOOLS Ya cant say it much better than that !!
  9. Seems to be a fact of life that the lost tool always and without fail re-apears as soon as its replacement is made and/or you fix the need another way. One of these days I'm gonna catch that little gremlin that hides stuff and kick his little xxx through his schnozz !!!!! Keep makin tongs too many don't exist Cliff
  10. Heres my style for what its worth ,I take three or four lengths of round rod sized to load and lengths eyeballed to what you envision the three or four or ?? different main branch lengths to finish out at .Hammer out ends to taper three or four similar length for roots taper hammer long ends to suit envisioning,Bend roots at 90 degrees and fan out to form base wire group together and weld bottom gap pick trunk height desired and spot weld around, stick trunk end in forgeup to roots to heat all or as much of trunk as possible when hot stick in vice and twist rods to suit. If still hot enough make first bends on branches. Then break out the rosebud, heat and bend roots to suit, then tack weld roots to floor plate or work bench use rosebud to heat and bend branches to suit your vision, weld on extra forged branches if/as needed and/or leaves or whatever you can envision...(love that word) hope this helps...cliff
