  1. One of the easiest ways is to cut a hole in the plate to catch the outside lip of the brake drum. No welding. Rotors have a flat edge so cut out for the hub, again no welding. I would weld the air pipe to the drum. BP0518 Making a Forge Pot
  2. I use anything from coal fines (dust) to lumps of coal the size of your fist with the grates shown above. Built a fire last night (3 inch air pipe forge) with two sheets of newspaper and a shovel full of dry to maybe dampish coal dust on top. I keep the rest of the coal fines in a bucket of water, dip your hand in, and put a glop of wet coal "mud" on the fire. Low tech but it works for me. How wet? see attached photos BP0384 Using Coal Fines As to the holes, drop a bolt into each hole, or a little mud.
  3. I think this is the new Hofi anvil.
  4. Jim, I am so sorry to hear of the passing of you son. You are on the list and our prayers are with you. Our condolences to you and your family.
  5. Biggest problem I see is the size of the air holes. I find that 2 pieces of 1/2 inch material across a 3 inch diameter air opening works for me. BP0518 Making a Forge Pot. The 2 inch diameter air tube used 2 pieces of 1/4 inch rod. BP0133 55 Forge See attached photo. 6. Mary, IForgeIron has been called a lot of things, support group, extended family, etc. Thank you for your comments. Please keep us informed at to his progress.
  7. trattoclip, email me the image and I will post it for you.
  8. It is a shame to meet a someone wanting to get started in blacksmithing, show them an anvil collection, then destroy all their hopes by saying the anvils can not be used. This individual may be the next master if only they were encouraged and provided use of an anvil. To the individual that sees two or three anvils and feels that the owner should give one to them, anvils are tools, and like any other tool, you may need more than one size anvil for the work you do. New or used, the cost of an anvil is determined by the buyer and the seller. When they agree, that is the cost of that anvil. The true value of the anvil is when you get it home and use it. 10. A row of trees between you and then neighbor will stop a lot of noise, as will a solid fence. You may want to look at the ground conditions where the hammer is located. Loose ground will absorb the vibrations, where rock will rattle the neighbors teeth. Water levels in the ground may be a consideration.
  11. To discuss the specifics would not be fair to Sam as it is a personal matter between Sam and IForgeIron. As to your hypothetical situation, I will not be baited into a discussion. If there is "gray area" question, it would be prudent for you to contact the site administrator directly, whether it be IForgeIron or any other web site on the internet.
  12. Mary, tell Jimmy that he is on the list and we are pulling for him. We wish hem a full and speedy recovery.
  13. The tailgating section of IForgeIron had a couple of anvils available (reference Stiffy post). IForgeIron > Blueprints > BP0017 Plow Work IForgeIron > Getting Started IForgeIron > Blacksmithing Groups Locate a group near you and go to the meetings. The folks there can point you toward an anvil.

  16. The original question has been answered. Let's move on.
  17. Before this thread goes any further please read the following Site Guide Lines. They are posted to stay on top of the first section of the site Forum > Keeping you informed. IForgeIron has set it's standards high. The site guile lines were established to keep IForgeIron focused on metalworking, to keep the site a family forum where everyone is welcome, and to keep it a comfortable place to visit and to learn. When someone chooses to disregard the site guide lines, most times the site self moderates by someone reminding the individual that it if a family forum. If they continue to disregard the site guide lines, an administrator becomes involved. I will not discuss the specifics of Sam's ban other than to say he did not follow the site guidelines. The ban will expire and he will be welcome to use the site again, if he follows the site guidelines. Let me assure you, and everyone else, that if the site guide lines are followed, you should have nothing to worry about. IForgeIron goes out of it's way NOT to censure posts or opinions. The infraction to the site guide lines WAS NOT REMOVED. There was NO censorship. The poster of the material WAS removed (banned) for not following the site guide lines. There is no smell of censorship involved, it is all on the top of the table, face up, with nothing hidden. As to big brother watching, the IForgeIron members, moderators, and administrators all keep a watchful eye on the site to insure that it remains a family forum, and a comfortable place to visit. Currently that is over 3,600 (members) all ask to watch and monitor the site, and inform the admins of any problems. IForgeIron is blacksmithing and metalworking resource for the entire world to enjoy. We translate the site into many languages other than English so folks can use the information on IForgeIron even if they do not speak English. The standards for the site are set high, so anyone, anywhere in the world, can feel they are welcome to visit the site. The site guide lines simply keep the site open to all that wish to join us in a family forum, and learn about metal working.

  20. Look at the fire you use for heating 1/2 inch square stock. To heat 1 inch square, you need by volume, 1/2 x 1/2 horizontally by 1/2 x 1/2 vertically, or 4 TIMES the amount of steel and 4 TIMES the amount of heat. It also takes 4 TIMES as long to heat the metal (or so it seems). From 1 inch square to 2 inch square multiple again and you get 16 times the volume of steel. This requires 16 times the amount of heat !! The numbers may not be exact, but it sure takes LOT more fire and heat, and much more AIR. Caution, when you get it hot it gives off much more radiant heat so wear protective clothing.

You may want to go to IForgeIron.com > Blacksmithing Groups > GS0003 Blacksmithing Groups Look for a blacksmithing group near you and attend some of the meetings. Keep asking questions, photos help show us what you are doing so we can provide suggestions.

  25. Mark, I finally found the welding clip you spoke of in your post, The video starts off with with another project and forge welding is but a part of that entire video. This means you have a 10 meg download to view just a small part of the entire video. We have folks from over 50 world wide countries visit IForgeIron each month, and not everyone in the world has high speed modems. Many folks are still on dial up and this is unavailable to them.
