  1. I was planning on buying Zoeller's kit to cut down on the work somewhat
  2. I think that the database may have lost the inital post anyway... How do the T-Rex and Porter Burners stack up against each either.
  3. ive just started getting into Damascus in fact Im on my 4th knife. All has gone well except when I etched the most recent knife it turned black! After Etching it it was covered by a black substance. By the time I got it all off the pattern had been erased. Im Using radio shack PCB to etch with. I left it in for 30 minutes and it came out completey Black. Any suguestions on how I can prevent this?
  4. Thank you for your sugestions all. I will look into something like what you use in your shop it looks like a really good idea!
  5. Ok so i got two pieces of 7 inch stove pipe linked together for the chimney now I just need a way to mount it. I am planing on using the method of having a ten inch pipe com off the forge an feed into the chimney so that only a few inches of the chimney extened into the structure. Now I am not sure how to instal/support it any thoughts?
  6. Question about what material to use for a forge chimney. I have recently completed my new blacksmithing shop all I need to add is the forge chimney and I am stuck. Im planning on do something like this I Forge Iron*-* BP0394 Side Draft Forge. No my question is what to use for the bigger pipe that goes up through the ceiling and where to get it. None of the hardwares stores near me seems to have pipe larger than 10 inch and even if they did im not certain what I should get.
  7. I recently made my first damascus knife and currently im working on my second however im having a hard time locatiing a cheap source for matierials. Namley 1095 and 15n20. Does anyone know where these materials can be obtained from?
  8. Thank you...I did not realise that they where an automotive part. I have contacted one of the automotive stores in my town and they carry them. Thanks alot for your help!
  9. I'm trying to build a burner as described in the book Gas Burners for Forges, Furnaces, and Kilns. However it calls for a 3/16th inch inverted female nut. I cant find this thing anywhere. Any ideas?
  10. My first question is in regard to alternative fuel sources. I have more or less ready acces to coal being that I live in Western PA but I am slightly consonered using it because of its adverse healthe effects, because it casuesa some harm to the envoiroment and finally I am sure it drives my neigbors nuts. I have considered using charcoal but due to its high cost in terms of moneyh to buy and time to produce I dont belive its is feasible. I have read about using corn on this forum which seems like an ideal sollution to all three of my concerns. However is it feasible to use on a semi regular basis and if so will my table forge equied with a centaur forge fire pot and hand cranked blower be good enougn for this fuel. Also how is it used in comparison to coal? My second question IK have a mostly full 100 pound propane tank that has had the same fuel in it for the last 3 years, can I still use this for a propane forge or will the fuel need replaced
  11. im not certain...next time I am at the local steel yard I will ask.
  12. I'm sorry I should have included that! I'm just using hot rolled mild steel.
  13. I've Noticed recently that cracks have been forming in the radius area of shoulders I've formed using either the anvil edge or a spring fuller. The cracks are small and form a sort of spider web pattern. These cracks also seem to seriously degrade the metal as they break easily at this point. I'm not sure what is causing this I never burn this area and am at a loss of what to do to prevent this. Any thoughts?
  14. Thanks all for the good sugestions !!! Im going to put this to due later today and hopefuly start getting better with my hammer.
  15. Hi I am fairly new to blacksmithing and I'm struggling with hammer control. Anything that I forge is covered with terrible hammer marks and gouges. I have dressed my hammer face and I feel that my hammer control is to blame. I feel that the reason for this is that when I hit the metal my hammer blows are not straight up and down but at a slight angle making the edge of the hammer dig into the metal with each blow. That being said I have had little luck in correcting the issue. I have noticed using a lighter hammer helps some. My question is what is the best way to learn good hammer control and keep these hammer marks off of what I'm Forging?
