Excelsior 3 wheel roll bender

Featured Replies

For the last 45 yrs I have wanted a true gear powered 2 wheel ring roller.

I have a Plummer open side 1 wheel and then I picked up a dual drive which was a little smaller that wanted but it fits the build.

Well a month or so ago I found an electric ring roller and thought it was 2 wheel but to my delight it turned out to be a 3 driven wheel model.

I struck my dream machine.

I belive I can also use it as a rolling mill since 2 of the wheels are in near perfect alignment.

Its triple reduction gear drive.

2 wheels are gear driven and the 3rd is chain driven.

Here's a little video.

Jennifer,

I am a bit ignorant of these machines; are they used with hot steel to roll out sheet, or what is the intended purpose? It seems to make rings of one circumference.

Do they do "more"?

Patrick

I don't see the video, just a play bar with the run timer.  Chrome on Windows 10.

Lee, I'm not sure about what is going on with your computer..   It plays fine on my windows 11 pro machine.

Do you have popups blocked for IFI?  the video just plays on the screen with no pop up..

Maybe a moderator can help explain it.   sorry

Lee, that's happened to me in the past and I just clicked the 3 dots in the lower right corner of the video and downloaded. Then watched on my device.

No popup blocker enabled here.  I even downloaded it and media player said it could not play it, it doesn't have the codec.

Lee that means there's a software mismatch, most likely the video being made by something newer than your software. The codec is the component that decodes the data stream read by media player, you could think of it as a translator. For what its worth, it plays just fine on my Mac with a somewhat older operating system.

Thanks Shaina, that worked nicely. I have Windows Edge which is "supposedly" a step up from Win 11 releases. Anyway when I used Shaina's trick it downloaded 24meg. Which seriously exceeds Iforge's file size limit. It downloaded directly to my comp, opened and played. Just NOT on Iforge, on my comp.

Of course it played for you Jennifer it was playing from your own files, not off Iforge.

That's a beefy set of rolls, does it say how heavy it will roll in a single pass? I'd be tempted to try rolling say 1/4" x 4" the hard way in the groove. How far will it open up? That will tell you how large it'll roll though not necessarily max thickness. Be aware it will easily roll your hand to your shoulder and then some. keep your fingers to the side of the rollers, never feed it straight in!

Nice machine it'd be fun to play with. :)

Hey Patrick,   It's basically the same as an old time 3 wheel hoop/wagon tire bender.     Difference is this machine is electric and gear driven and the speeds are pretty high.

A rolling mill is how metals are processed into bars or into flat stock..

I mentioned the use as a rolling mill because the rollers align vertically..

Here is a modern type of rolling mill used by bladesmiths:

Here are a few traditional tire benders that are hand operated.   The side one is a Boynton and Plummer made in Worcester, MA, they had a how blacksmithing and wheelwright tool producer.  This is a single wheel drive like most of this time frame.

The second photo is of a dual drive wheel type where the hand crank powers 2 rollers..   This was a huge upgrade vs single wheel drive.

here are the 2 rings bent on the machine.

Same principal as slip rolls for sheet metal work, say rolling stove pipe or similar tube. Ring rollers are just narrower and usually beefier.

That’s really cool. Jennifer, thanks for taking the time to explain it. Now I have a desire for a tool I didn’t know I needed!

Im always impressed with you increasing skill set and kit. One day I’d love to see the teaching shop in person.

You are welcome to come anytime.. Once it's open, of course, there will be classes.   Now, it's really a matter of show and tell and the Hopes..

You'd love it here even now.  I have been told it's 90% museum and 10% school..  The Neatest thing for me, is I'm hopeful I can help others on their journey to fully understand the potential of these old machines and use them in their modern shops..

When all labor was by hand, they really figured out how to use everything to their advantage.  Today most people really feed off of others' limitations as gospel and I see this as one of the largest problems.

Being self taught and never having been under this limited information allowed for me to explore with no expectations of success or failure..   Just the results, and this is what I bring, as I fully understand why something works or doesn't work.   Or the other way, people say this or that doesn't work, yet this is only because of their limited perspective.

Mind you, it's always best not to listen to others but with a grain of salt.  Forget what you heard and go after it with the vigor of youth be willing to make your own mistakes.

This axe is a perfect example..    There was an attempt to weld it about 6X and the weld did not take. I convinced the person to send it to me to fix..   Yet I was able to weld it and finish it up..   What a gift this person education wise would have received had they had some good teaching guidance.   Just sayin..

You still have my contact info right???

Your about 3hrs away from what I remember.

Mm Hmmmmm. No starting information, learning without expectation of success of failure and just do it, eh?

Which martial arts did you study again?

Frosty,  if what you wrote is based on what you took away from it after reading it, then ???

Not sure where, how, or why martial arts has anything to do with it.

We are talking about forging yes, yes..

Approaching a situation without expectation of success or failure is how a martial artist avoids surprise if a confrontation turns violent. Confrontation does not mean hostile or friendly it is a neutral term.

Approaching projects without expectations of success or failure is very much inline with what is taught in the dojo and bespeaks training.  Lastly I recall you having martial arts training, self taught or formal but I don't recall which art and I was curious which.

Doing without expectation of the outcome is a basic principle and applies to many if not all deliberate actions.

That does not mean starting a project unprepared for the work, say framing a house without bringing your tools. In that situation it means not preparing for any problem that might occur.

If you don't see the parallels, that's okay my memory is probably at fault, don't sweat it forget I asked. Okay?

Yes, you are exactly right and could not be explained better.. thank you

There are seveal people who are instructors,  they show clips..   I like watching them over the last 5 years as they mature.  there was another guy who I lost track of..  He's Israeli.. He's been at it a long time..

The longer someone has been doing Ninpo taijutsu the softer their movements.

Evidently not. I'm not going to take part in distracting from blacksmithing by sidetracking into the martial arts AGAIN. It's already trashed another thread.

Frosty The Lucky.

These days, I try to start every project with an expectation of success or failure.  I'm out of space to store the ones that end up in between. ;)

Well Mike I hope for you.. that at some point you no longer have expectations and merely take each moment and skill and apply it to the best of your ability.

Break down the steps into a known skill and it's amazing what happens when skills are linked together.

This should be in the Blacksmith Wisdom thread (or whatever it's called).   It's a succinct statement that explains how to do almost ANYTHING, not just at the anvil.

Thanks for that one Jennifer.

Jennifer, thought I posted this before. Apologies.

I'm a bit farther than that, unfortunately. Emmitsburg is next to Gettysburg, PA, so some 7 or 8 hours minimum.

Once there are classes in full swing do let us all know. I know I would love it, because I love any place that houses machines, tools, and the sweet smell that only antique equipment and tools carries with it, be that museum or shop.

Brian,  my pleasure. Every once in a while, something of merit comes about.

Patrick,  I sure will..   When I'm driving a lot, nothing seems that far.  Now, mind you, I hate driving 5 miles up the road to buy a bolt..   I will usually make one in house..  Takes less time.
