November 23, 20241 yr Look pretty good and useful too. THAT'S how to enjoy some free time! Frosty The Lucky.
November 23, 20241 yr Love the horseshoe S hooks... one of those why didn't I think of that. Should be great for heavy stuff. I can now envision making 2 hooks from each horseshoe and mounting them on a nice mounting board or riveted to a forged flat mounting base. I can't control the wind, all I can do is adjust my sail’s.~ Semper Paratus
November 24, 20241 yr Isn't there a subsection here about horse shoe projects? I've made a version of what you're describing many times, sometimes toe up sometimes doe down. I think I made 8-10 of them for the boarding ranch where we kept our horses. Also made bunches of horse shoe hoof picks. Made them in metal shop class, no way would a farrier let me touch his anvil, hammers, etc. He was at work and would maybe answer a question once in a while. Otherwise the ONLY acceptable reason for me to be anywhere near while he was shoeing was to fetch horses and hold if necessary. Frosty The Lucky.
November 24, 20241 yr Yes there is and I forgot I have it book marked. I can't control the wind, all I can do is adjust my sail’s.~ Semper Paratus
November 24, 20241 yr Author A horseshoe hoof pick is the next project on the list. Our farrier is the opposite, as in he loves to talk. Last time he was out he gave us a 5 gallon bucket worth of shoes. The toes are worn witch makes them want to bend and twist at that thinner point. But the price is right and gives us something to practice with. Thanks for the thread link. Though I don't think I could bring myself to actually use a spoon made from a horseshoe, or at least not a used one. (I've seen where they have been). Yes, I know at 2000° nothing is left that will hurt you, but the thought.
November 24, 20241 yr Uh huh, that's what you get for having a thought. Horse manure isn't nearly as dangerous to eat as an omnivore or carnivore, entirely different digestion bugs. We used to have road apple fights regularly and if you haven't been hit in the mouth / face you weren't in the game. Frosty The Lucky.
November 30, 20241 yr Frosty; The ones that were crusty/dry on the outside, and still pretty fresh on the inside were the best for throwing, and still go "SPLAT".
November 30, 20241 yr Not fresh enough for a good road apple fight. Fresh they're firm but juicy and leave a nice green stain when they hit to mark you. An hour or two is a good drain period. Ones that go splat are often from a horse that has indigestion or just loose poops, those are more likely to spray the thrower than stay together as ballistic weapons. Have you ever thrown cow pies? Those have to have a day or two to dry out enough to be thrown, the perfect pie can be thrown like a Frisbee for good distance. Regardless both sides should wear something poo proof. Frosty The Lucky.
December 1, 20241 yr I grew up on a farm deep in a holler in KY and we never once threw any cow pies at each other and the only apples we threw were green ones off the tree. And y'all call us hillbilly?!? I will tell you this though, i would rather be stung by a hornet than hit with a little green apple.
December 1, 20241 yr Author Made some hoofpicks! The first one, I had too much material and is too long after it was drawn out. I cut some off the end but I think I will cut more off and reforge the pick end. The second one I think turnd out nice. I also made my first tool. A punch. It's out of mild steel but works. You can see the hole I punched in the first hoofpick handle.
December 1, 20241 yr Good Morning, My understanding of a 'Hoof Pic' is so you can dig and pull toward yourself. In reality, I don't think there are any incorrect 'Hoof Pic's' Enjoy your opening, keep it Funn'. Neil
December 25, 20241 yr I dunno, those cheep ones that look like a bent screwdriver are, to me, incorrect.
