What is this weird anvil for?

Featured Replies

Pretty much just curious what the heck this would be used for. Unique design to me. Best guess, = Saddle / leather work?

Also, it's A: not mine, and B: on C/L in Camdenton MO, USA. I just found it whilst browsing.

Isn't that something?

Thanks!

Be aware these kinds of "anvils" and there are hundreds of variations, are cast iron and not suitable for more than light hammer work, Light as in straightening nails cold, or maybe forging nails from HOT stock.

Frosty The Lucky.

They were pretty commom in small ranchs and farms back in the day.

I'd like to find one of those.  I collect oddball tools.  Mostly hand tools, but whatever.

Scott, you can buy one brand new for about $300 (US) on line. The ones they carry look a bit stronger as well. The jaws of the vice instead of being that high above the anvil face are flush with it.

I have one similar to the one Glenn has above. I don't use it but it looks cool.

Billy, if I didn't have a nice heavey duty vise I'd consider it.  My collection oddity tools are mostly old ones.  I like finding homemade ones too at sales and junk shops, and trying to figure out what they were made for.
