March 14, 20224 yr I'm not big on Chinese products, especially tools. However, I've kept this one around because it has a feature I occasionally find very handy... the jaws will swivel 360 degrees. It's a little older, and a little better quality than your typical Chinese stuff. I also like it because it was free!
March 14, 20224 yr We had one almost identical in a shop I used to work for and it lasted for years under heavy abuse till one day the slide snapped in half I don’t mind some Chinese tools but Personally I’m pretty picky about the bench vises in my shop, I tend to lean towards larger ones over 100 pounds and I only buy American made vises, that’s just me though there’s nothing wrong with those vises I’m just weird about my vise vice lol
March 14, 20224 yr Malleus, I had one of those for years. I liked the swivel too. Great on the workbench corner. Billy, like the one in the shop you worked for, I abused it heavily and one day the movable jaw part broke in half. I tried 3 times unsuccessfully to weld it back together. I finally just kept the flat part in back for beating stuff on.
March 14, 20224 yr Author I definitely understand about the American made stuff. I'm the same way. I've had this one in storage for years, but figured I would drag it out. I'm sure it will come in handy when I need something on a different angle. Maybe if I only use it for those situations, it will last. Life's too short to keep your vises in storage.
March 15, 20224 yr I have one of those, made in Taiwan, and it is Good Iron. Love that swivel. Lots of inferior clones flooded the market, it seems. Got one of those in two pieces, rusting in the yard. My other three bench vises are U.S. iron... Robert Taylor
January 31Jan 31 Found one that looks identical. My latest antique store find. Yes it was made in China, but for $40, I couldn't pass up its versatility. It looks as though it has had very little use, if any; the anvil has no marks, and the jaws are pristine - opens, closes smoothly - spins & locks down freely - jaws spin 360 deg smoothly & locks down when jaws are tight. I was told on another forum that these Chinese vises are hit or miss - may take a beating and last forever or might break with the first beat down? We shall see.
February 2Feb 2 Purchased this one used, 6 inch jaws. I think the original owner bought it at one of those cummins tool sales that used be kind of popular 20 or 30 years ago. It does ok, but I burnt and chipped a bunch of the plastic body filler away while using it.
February 3Feb 3 Good Morning, Use your Vice to Hold Things. Use your Anvil to Hit Things on. DO NOT use your Vice for Forging On. The more moving parts, the more it doesn't work well at everything!! Neil
