Nathan Kraft
My aunt had a kitchen knife that broke right below the bolster, just leaving a bit of the tang, and she would like me to fix. I was thinking I could probably epoxy it, drill a small hole through the handle and attatched tang, and put a small (nail) pin in it. Do y’all think that would work? JHCC
Ouch. Not a lot of tang left on that, and the fact that it broke right there tells me that the tang is overhardened anyway. For display ONLY, epoxy will work. For actual use, the only thing I could suggest would be to weld on a new tang (using proper preheat and post-heat) and then redo the heat treatment and make a new handle. Others more experienced than I may have better suggestions.
Daswulf
Actually might be able to weld the tang without having to re heat treat the blade if the blade is kept cool while welding and cooldown. It is close tho.
Steve Sells
I have to agree with the guys; place blade in water to keep it cool and weld a new tang in place
ThomasPowers
Repairs like that I have seen were done with a tig welder. I would suggest drawing temper afterwards.
