ausfire
Guy turned up at my forge today with a nice old leg vice he wanted to sell. I don't really need another leg vice, but I did buy it because I have never seen one with a left hand action. It seems in good shape: all complete including spring and mount, not too loose in the thread, jaws not damaged, clean and oiled. So what is the advantage of a left hand thread?? I probably won't be using this vice, but if I did, I think anti-clockwise tightening would take some getting used to.
ThomasPowers
Looks like the screw and screwbox was a replacement to me. Perhaps that was what they had to hand when they did it?
Kozzy
Replacement would be my guess too. Probably had an ACME threaded rod and nut left from something else that was going in the scrap bin and got salvaged. The most common might be certain types of turnbuckles --does the nut bear any signs that it might have come from such a thing?
ausfire
Could well be a salvaged part. Works well though, if you remember to turn it the right way. Go the usual way and you're likely to have hot steel drop on your foot!
ThomasPowers
Good trick vice to have others demo with... It's your Auntie vise....auntie clockwise that is...
bertie_bassett
quite possibly the shaft has come from a sluice valve or similar item. LH threads give a clockwise shut which is perhaps slightly more common then the anticlockwise shut for water mains. ( all depending on what the local authority prefered)
BillyBones
I would like a left hand thread on my vice. My dyslexic self, i turn it backwards a lot.
