Owen Hinsman
So I was thinking about sword canes, and I had an idea for a spike that would sort of pop out of the base of the cane when a button was pressed. It would lock out when extended, and a little door would cover it when retracted. Any idea as for how the mechanism would work?
Steve Sells
same as any other switch blade knife, also be aware they are illegal in many places.
ThomasPowers
As mentioned look at how stiletto switchblades----the ones that the blade comes out the end rather than rotates out. May even be able to locate some patent drawings. Also as noted: possession of such on your person may be considered a felony in many places in the USA. Charles R. Stevens
The leagal aspect aside, the tip of the cane is a poor place for such a mechanism as that is where it is likely to come in contact with all manner of filth. A grounding spike/lug would be mor practical. I have seen canes with retractable spiked heads making them sort of a mace but again, this is more a cool factor than a great defensive tool. A brass tipped and knobbed light to medium weight cane makes a great defensive tool on the other hand. Infact their is a Victorian era martial art that encorperates a genatalmans walking stick very effectively.

swedefiddle
Owen, Sounds like you are dreaming rather than trying to figure out a process. If you can't figure it out, you shouldn't be making it. Neil
