I have a pile of scrap waiting to made into a coal/coke forge of some kind ( still undecided what type). That will be my first step on hopefully a long and rewarding journey. I look forward to learning from you all( you guys certainly know your stuff) and mabey able to contribute in time. Right of to read as many files as I can. JustAnotherViking
Drowned by rain or eaten alive by the midges... definitely 'awesome'
ThomasPowers
Ever tried forging with peat as the fuel? (It does rank above buffalo chips!)
the iron dwarf
welcome I am a bit further south of you but one of my customers in the shetlands intends to use peat as fuel in one of my forges, normally we use coal or coke and some use charcoal. find out what fuel you can get and make your forge to suit
ThomasPowers
Forging is very much an "any fuel is better than no fuel" activity; but *good* fuel sure affects the productivity, ease and fun of forging.

In a country so young as america, we have not had much time to build up our own "flavor". I absolutely love 13-16th century Scottish Weaponry. It Is a shame though, about their weapons restrictions. Cant Imagine not being allowed to carry one of my own blades.
JustAnotherViking
Yeah I assumed the historic element was what you meant rather than the climate and fauna. My last trip over there involved just shy of 900 miles on the bike, and I think we had about 2 hours without rain . Thought we had it bad in Ireland, but the Highlands rain is in a whole other category! Properly wet rain.
