October 29, 20178 yr I brought this peterwright today seeing if I can get a date on it. Its 247 pounds.
October 29, 20178 yr Can't help with the question but it looks to be in excellent shape! Do the side holes go clear through?
October 29, 20178 yr PW didn't put serial numbers on their anvils so its a guess as to when they were made. If it has "England" stamped on it, it is a later make probably after 1908.
October 29, 20178 yr Author Its in great shape the edges and hardie hole are basically brand new. They are so crisp. And yes the holes are threaded all the way through and theres one right after the cut table. Do you know what they are? The guy said its for tooling but I dont know what for. I yet to find clean marks on the anvil besides the weight stamp. Im going to clean it up and see what I find. Ill keep this updated.
October 30, 20178 yr The holes were for whatever the guy who added them to his anvil wanted them for. Probably only many thousand possibilities... For example you could probably use them to hold damping plates against the anvil to quiet it down. Holders for chain links when making chain, Pivot points for a step on workpiece holders, Hand forged holders for your coke can,....
October 30, 20178 yr Author Oh haha thats funny but does the value or anything change about the anvil? The face looks brand new.
October 30, 20178 yr Drill 4 holes in your car roof to put a custom roof rack on. Then remove it and sell the car; did it affect the price? Yes it affects the price and not in a positive way. Weird as they would not cause discernable loss of functionality for almost any smith. The beautiful face would trump such holes for me. (But I still would not be willing to pay as much as for an un modified anvil...)
October 30, 20178 yr They are a forged wrought iron body with a steel faceplate forge welded on. It looks like a great anvil. Perhaps later you will find uses for the holes. For now just know you got a nice anvil there and use it in good health.
October 30, 20178 yr Thinkin it also affects the price, price goes down if I am buying, or up when I'm selling. I would consider tapping out the holes, threading bolts through. If you leave the bolt heads in, it could be your Frankinanvil. N.N.F. Beautiful, Manchester, Michigan. USA
October 30, 20178 yr Author Yeah thats what I thought I can see a small line where the forge weld is. I was sure if it was repaired. And all 3 holes are threaded should I just stick some bolts in it?
October 30, 20178 yr How about a workpiece rest that slides in and out of those holes? (Round stock that just fits forge a |__| from it and bend up the closed ends so it is level with the anvil face.
