Shanem Posted January 31, 2017 Posted January 31, 2017 HI All, just getting into the hobby. Started with a piece of railway track but came across this anvil and figured it was better than the track. Seems the previous owner ground off the maker markings for some reason. Maybe he bought it and thought the previous owner stamped his name in it?? Only other markings are 1 3 7 which I assum is the weight in hundreds? and a "V" on the foot under the horn. Any ideas? It came from a community that traded heavily with England back in the day. C-1ToolSteel Posted January 31, 2017 Posted January 31, 2017 Nice anvil. Definitely an elglish brand. 203lbs if i'm doing my math right... Quote
Daswulf Posted January 31, 2017 Posted January 31, 2017 I think I might be seeing what looks like an Arm and Hammer stamping. Not sure. Quote
ThomasPowers Posted January 31, 2017 Posted January 31, 2017 Easy way to differentiate: Weigh it on a bathroom scale. If it's around 137 pounds it's an american anvil; if its around 203 definitely an english anvil. Quote
C-1ToolSteel Posted January 31, 2017 Posted January 31, 2017 Yeah, let me change that to, "definitely an English *style*". Quote
Lionel h Posted January 31, 2017 Posted January 31, 2017 Looks rather mouse holey to me it's a dead ringer to my mouse hole. Quote
Tubalcain2 Posted February 1, 2017 Posted February 1, 2017 mousehole generally put large punch marks tween the numbers. no sign of that here. Quote

MH anvils also tend to have a ridge running down the underside of the horn, and I'm not seeing that here (although it's hard to tell from these photos). Quote
C-1ToolSteel Posted February 2, 2017 Posted February 2, 2017 I like how you can clearly see the way it was made by looking at the feet. Quote
