Clover Saint
So I'm hoping that people might see and respond to this as I'm in need of some others help. I'm located in a city not too far from cleveland, and I'm looking for an anvil. Whether or not it's mild steel, or hardened doesn't matter right now. I'm just trying to find a good place, or places to look or keep in mind. I am aware of SOFA, but don't think I could make it down there at this time. Any and all help is appreciated. Sincerely, Clover Saint
Glenn
Do a site search for TPAAAT. Follow the instructions, carry cash. Do not get excited and jump at the first offer, but choose the anvil quality and price you feel comfortable with. Then be careful as anvils will start popping up everywhere. JHCC
In my garage, but I'm keeping it! Seriously, though, do not get hung up on getting a London pattern anvil. Lots of people do great work on pieces of railroad track, truck axles, forklift tines, big ol' hunks o' steel, etc. Read some of the threads in the Anvil section of IFI to get ideas, and keep an open mind! So, whereabouts are you in northern Ohio?
Clover Saint
I'm looking more for something along a sawyers anvil. And around here scrap is scarce. And I'm just south of cleveland.
JHCC
Check out the scrap yards around the area for something blocky. Keep an open mind, and bring a box of donuts or something as a thank-you to the yard staff. Check out the Western Reserve Artist-Blacksmith Association; they might be able to help you out. ThomasPowers
I'm betting that forklifts get used up there! http://www.marco-borromei.com/fork.html Pity about Quad-State, I drove in from New Mexico for it, (odometer said 2000 miles each way) and saw several tons of anvils for sale; shoot there were at least two people who had 15 anvils for sale apiece! Man, that's a bummer. I don't think I could contain myself around all of that steel! And thanks for the link, it's appreciated
ThomasPowers
My main buys this year were H-13 rod to make chisels and punches from, a bit of ebony, some tools to make tools from; some coal and a postvise and a book for a student of mine and a copy of Steve's knifemaking book for my collection and some T shirts, and some tongs and a 3" long piece of 3" diameter Titanium (CP 2) I'm thinking of making a hammer from and..... A lifetime of hammering would probably never ever show. You should make it a destination for you next September. As noted above, people drive in from all over the country for this event. Me....650 miles each way.
