Smokeman
Still working on my first Tomahawk made from a Railroad Spike. Thought I would share a couple pics of my progress. Planning on doing some burning on the haft, not sure of what yet. Anyway, here they are.
flat creek
The hawk looks good. The next 50 you make will be easier. Keep up the good work. Preston

Doug C
Really nice work. What size hole did you drift for the handle? Was it round or oval?
Smokeman
The drift hole is around 1/2". It is round. I will do an oval the next time as the hawk has the tendency to slip and turn.
Dodge
Very nice. Especially considering its your first! Which do you do first; forge the blade or drift the hole?

Old South Creations
nice job! I haven't tried one yet...maybe that will be my next project!
Smokeman
I roughed out the blade then drilled 1/4" hole. I then heated and punched through the 1/2" hole. I left the punch in the hole while I finished forging out the blade. I then smoothed it out on the belt sander.

dablacksmith
that is a great first rr spike tommahawk! if i can make a suggestion you might want to use a hot chizel to start the hole then use a drift to finish it... you end up with more meat around where the handle is going thru also you can use drift left in hole to draw down more of the side to give the eye area more "height" . good luck! CurlyGeorge
Smokeman, it's hard to get that blade much wider than that, by hand, isn't it? Takes a LOT of pounding! I use the teardrop drift, on mine. Open my post vice and drift down between the jaws. You did a very nice job, for your first one. My first one didn't come out nearly so nice. Keep it going. JerryCarroll
I upset the blade end a couple of inches before drawing it out. Start drawing the blade by hammering the upset end edges back toward the body of the hawk. Upset first--split for the handle then draw out the cutting end. Then I finish the eye. A picture is in the gallery. Edited October 7, 2008 by JerryCarroll forgot something
