Medina2928
Is there anyone in the San Antonio area that provides heat treating services, or any members here that would provide services. I have knives in 1095, files, and rasps. I am currently working on researching which forge im going to build. Any help would be greatly appreciated. notownkid
You have tried Yellow Pages? Stop at a machine shop esp. a tool & die making shop they will know who does heat treating in your area. I worked in a T & D shop and we used some all the time but they were in the Hartford CT area.
Steve Sells
read the sticky for HT blades yet? it is not hard to do for simple steels I went into a little more detail in my book, but it covers enough to get you doing it properly
Medina2928
Yes I have read the stickies. I just don't have a set up yet. Believe me I don't want to get blasted for not reading stickies and researching...
Charles R. Stevens
It's not so much about getting blasted, it's just so much easer for an expert (and you would be floored by the kind of expertise members bring to the table) to answer a question from some one who is atleast ignorant. Often you have to learn enugh to relise you are infact ignorant, but you know enugh to acualy apretiate and understand the answer
Medina2928
I have searched sites and post. Searched the web. I know of places that heat treat. I was hoping to find someone alot closer who knew of a local service or would provide a service. Any input is greatly appreciated
Charles R. Stevens
I can not help you find a heat treater, but Steve and the other knife guys can certainly help you learn to do it your self. Master Sells heat treats swords old school... I have seen his shop. I have seen a finished blade in need of furniture I would love to have infact... when I get rich! Medina2928
I'm all about doing it myself. My brother and I run our ranch by trying to do as much as possible on out own. If all works out in will have a large forge to work with. My grandfather had a lot of blacksmithing equipment in have to try and track down. BIGGUNDOCTOR
The files and rasps will be the wild cards as the alloys are not known. I was told by the materials guy at Nicholson that their MACHINIST files could treated like W-1, but their wood files, and rasps are a lesser alloy since wood and hooves are not as hard. Telling a shop to heat treat them without knowing what they are may get you iffy results.

Charles R. Stevens
I like the river rock!. The pull offs can be re worked, I have a set of milers I use to hold spikes and such. Tho one looks to be in good shape, they are exelent for pulling nailes after you break off the head.
