Daswulf
Ok so while I was attempting a nail header and failing I worked on my first hot cut hardy. Here is what I came up with. It was 3/4" by 1 1/2" stock. My hardy hole is about 7/8 if I remember right. I actually haven't tried it yet and that's the best test. But I finished it up at the end of the night. noobrider
Looks like a usable tool for me.nicely done.Believe me or not, in a half year or something, you'll be thinking of replacing it with a new version of it from your own! The great thing about blacksmithing is being Able to make tools for the job. I will try it and see how it works, and if it can be better I will modify it. If i need a different one, I can Make it. NickOHH
Do you know what kinda steel or was it mystery metal?? But a nice looking cut off, if it cuts which it looks like it will just fine that's what matters if it doesn't hold up make another
Charles R. Stevens
Remember, spring is the important part, not a solid wedge, iether a thin peice with a kink to stedy the tool or one shaped like a holddown. Depending on the shape of the hardy tool
Daswulf
It's mystery metal. And yeah it it dosn't hold up i'll make one from truck axle and see how it holds up.
Charles R. Stevens
I cheat most often by making hot cuts out off sucker rod knuckles.
NickOHH
Well it was good practice alteast! Axle would be good I used a peice of 1 1/4" torsion bar of a dodge ram for mine, could be tougher but it holds up just fine for me , get ready though next one will be more of a workout to forge. Daswulf
If it works and it's easy and your not taking away from someone it aint cheatn Charles. we call that working smart not hard.
Charles R. Stevens
Its still work, especialy if you start with a 1 1/4 knuckle insted of a 1"
Daswulf
yeah that would be.
Charles R. Stevens
If you score knuckles i recomend using the stem end for the hardy shank, you still have to forge it down, but the treaded end makes a better tool face.
Daswulf
Ok so, it worked great. It dulled a hair but it didn't dull bad. Tried it with 6mm rod and round about 1/2 rebar.
Daswulf
sorry, the last pic is the parent material..
NickOHH
Looks like it worked just fine, when I started using mine it dulled a bit but it has more or less stayed where it is since the first couple of uses so it seems you have a fine cut off. JHCC
Hmm...looks rather like the one I made from a jackhammer bit, shown here with the spring clip that hardens up the fit in the hardie hole:
Daswulf
Didn't have a jackhammer bit, but ya can't beat a good design.
