scottyp74
Are Ball peen hammer heads tool steel? If so I have 2 8oz and 2 16oz heads laying around and wanted to make a few hot sets out of them. Would they work good for that?
Frosty
Ball peins make good top tools of most types. Draw the temper on the end you're going to strike with a hammer into the purple, you don't want it chipping.Frosty The Lucky.
Charles R. Stevens
Wile Frosty's sugjestion is the perferd method (never know who is going to gran what hammer) some ise a dedicated soft face hammer, such as a stone carvers hammer. ThomasPowers
There is no natural law that states that all ball peens have to be made from the same alloy by every manufacturer over the last 200 years and many different countries. In general they tend to be medium to high carbon steels and not high alloy steels; but you have to check on a per hammer basis to be sure. matto
Then you also have the experience in making said tool. And that is worth a lot.

ThorsHammer82
Top tool, anything hit by a hammer on top of a work piece.Bottom tool, anything the work piece sits on while being worked on with a hammer or top tool. AKA hardies, swages, etc.So to answer your question, yes, slitter, punch, chisel. what you'd be making with a ball peen is a handled top tool, assuming you are still able to put a handle in it when you're done. matto
Try forming the ball down for the striking end and the face of the ball pein for the tool.
