remist17
I'm trying to make a base for my RR track. I have some scrap 4x4 but I was thinking about using RR ties. I have a two foot length that I was thinking about using as the bottom. Then use the 4x4 to " frame" it in. Not sure of this is smart or not. turbo7
The rail track will work better on its end, chisel or use a router to cut out the shape if the bottom in a stump.
Charles R. Stevens
One can also place the track end on a block and atach the flange to a taller block.
SmoothBore
Fuggin "Forbidden" ..... With the Rail standing on end, ... a 15" long piece of 2" Angle, ... with holes at the ends, ... welded on the end of the Rail, to form an upside-down "T", ... and another 3" long bit, welded to what was originally the "top" of the Rail, ... yields a stable "3-point" base, ... that can then be Lagged to any kind of wooden base.. remist17
Got base made. I tried to drill but went through three drill bits and didn't scratch the surface. Even used oil on the drills. So to attach to base was thinking to use lags and washers washer actually securing the rail to the wood. Also ratchet strap bottom. Any other suggestions
Frosty
Do you have a torch? You can simply torch bolt holes OR heat the spots you wish to drill to black heat and let them air cool. Using a carbide drill bit might do it but any chatter will kill expensive bits.Your idea to use washers on screws outside the flange will work just fine. If you were to drill a couple holes in a couple pieces of say 1/4"x1 1/2" strap to act like you envision for the washer it'll be more secure.Frosty The Lucky.
