MarkDobson
I was on craigslist the other day and found this guy, was curious if anyone on here has seen anything quite like it. looks like the horn was added afterwards and the heel looks too short to bee original. Charles R. Stevens
Dont take it to the bank, but old (early colonial) anvils were not much more than blocks, with smallish horns. Tho the steel plate looks aufly thick for a real oldie,
ThomasPowers
if it was found in your location that form usually screams "pre 1800" Great if you do colonial historical demos and wan the correct kit for it. Do the ball bearing test---a lot of years for possible structure fires on those and they tend to be softer to start with. MarkDobson
its down by Pittsburgh actually, so it would be a bit of a drive to go take a look. i was more curious about it than anything, never seen one like it before, especially with that horn design. ThomasPowers
Yes the small horn that looks almost like it was an afterthought is a known feature of the earlier london pattern anvils.
Judson Yaggy
Wasn't there a gigantic PA anvil with a very small horn shown somewhere in the back of AIA? Similar proportions to this one maybe. Gonna have to dig out my copy and look...The body on this one looks cast to me just because of the asymmetry. EDITYup, page 423. Very similar horn/body proportions. Edited July 10, 2015 by Judson Yaggy
ausfire
My, that's an ugly looking anvil. But isn't it often that ugliness can be sort of endearing. Ask anyone who drives an old Citroen. That anvil would have an interesting history - I'd like to own it.
