RDSBandit
What are your thoughts about this as an anvil? It is 4140 pre heat treated. It has an OD of 6 1/2 inches. I can probably get it for scrap price or maybe even free.
Michael Cochran
I'd jump on it if I were you. I'm sure others will say the same.
Glenn
Why ask us, grab it if it is free. You can always figure out what to do with it later. Otherwise it will cost you gas and a trip back to pick it up, IF it is still there.
turbo7
There's only one thing that talks louder than cash mate... FREE!!!, as an anvil nothing wrong with it, very useful. Set it in a block of wood and go at it.
RDSBandit
It's at the shop I work at. :-) I didn't know if the 4140 was a hard enough steel to use as an anvil.
ThomasPowers
Pre heat treated? You mean it's been heat treated to annealed for machining? Annealed would be a bit soft but still usable. However could you get it heat treated to hardened and tempered? in which case you would have a GREAT anvil.
RDSBandit
After we machine the parts the company we make them for heat treat them at their shop. As far as me getting it heat treated, or hardend and tempered I dunno, there may be a shop around town that could do it.

RDSBandit
Well, sorry to necro this thread, was just going to say I finally got this fixture. My boss put it in the scrap bin and I asked him if I could have it, he said yes. So it is now sitting in my shop.
Frozenforge
Free metal is always good, free known alloy metal even better.
notownkid
Free is the right price for most anything. My last boss told me the day I went to work to never use the words Free or Give in his presents, I would every once in a while, I've seen him throw his hat and shake his fist at me.
