wanted to know if anyone could hazard a guess as to the date, or tell me how to find the date of this "new" vise. there is a small crack in the front of the box, should i get it welded? cut it off? or leave well enough alone ? Finally , whats the best way to get the off-set in the jaws back into alignment ?

I'd investigate the plumbing fitting on the front jaw. Sometimes people space things out to move where the engagement point on the screw and screwbox is. If it's not needed for that I'd scrap the fitting and get a thrust washer for that location. Grind the cracked piece of the screwbox smooth.

The *BEST* method of fixing that offset is sending the vise to me in a large box using hundred dollar bills as packing.

Making the jaws align---Methods that work include: doing nothing. building a jaw cover from angle iron, heating the pivot plates and carefully shifting them up slightly, heating the front shaft and drawing it out slightly so the jaws align, grinding down the high jaw, building up the low jaw, and I even did one much worse that that by hot shrinking (and riveting)a plug in the original hole and re-drilling it so the jaws would mate...

You may want to investigate why they don't meet and use the method from above that corrects for that specifically.

Good Morning,

There a lot of very knowledgeable people in your area. Maritime Blacksmith Association and Cape Breton Blacksmith Association.

Cape Breton Blacksmith Association will be hosting "CanIRON X", July 1st weekend, 2015 in Baddeck.

There are more than enough postings in the IFIron library, on how to repair that Vice.
